Warmer seas bring jellyfish invasion to four nuclear reactors

Four nuclear reactors in Japan, Israel and Scotland were forced to shutdown due to infiltration of enormous swarms of jellyfish, which clogged the plant’s cooling system.
Earlier this week, the Orot Rabin nuclear power plant in Hadera, Israel was forced to shutdown when a swarm of jellyfish blocked the plant’s water supply which is used as a coolant.
The string of jellyfish surges began a week before with a reactor in Shimane, Japan. And in a week’s time two reactors at Torness power station, operated by EDF, in Scotland had to be shutdown as the seawater used as coolant was inundated with jellyfish.
The reactors were closed as precautionary measure due to “high volumes of jellyfish fouling the cooling water screens”, an EDF spokesman said.
Video on flooded Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant
VIDEO .http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/video/2011-07/05/c_13965568.htm U.S. Fort Calhoun nuclear plant flooded BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhuanet) — The Fort Calhoun plant north of Omaha in the US state of Nebraska has been surrounded by flood water from the Missouri River for over ten days. As worries mount, US authorities have reassured the public the plant is safe.
Could this be another Fukushima?
Operators of the Fort Calhoun plant say no.
But pictures like this make it hard to believe the official statement that only part of the utilities are flooded.
Rumors have spread that the reactors suffered a complete meltdown and that radioactive tritium is leaking into the river.
Nebraska has two nuclear plants along the Missouri River. The troubling photos have brought the Fort Calhoun facility into the spotlight.
But plant operator, Omaha Public Power, says all key buildings in the plant are secure. No flooding, no meltdown, no radioactive leakage……..
Nuclear industry leads on to global warming
VIDEO http://www.democracynow.org/blog/2011/6/30/nuclear_hubris_christian_parenti_on_what_japans_nuclear_disaster_means_for_the_us_energy_industry Democracy Now, 3 July In part two of our conversation with journalist Christian Parenti he discusses his recent article, Nuclear Hubris: Could Japan’s Disaster Happen Here?, about what the meltdown of three nuclear reactors in Japan means for the expansion of the nuclear power industry United States. “I think its important to problematize atomic power because some in the Green Movement look to it as a solution,” says Parenti. “But there is no way that this economy can create enough power from atomic energy in a cost-efficient manner in the time necessary.” Parenti argues the focus on developing atomic power diverts funds from the transition to clean technology and pushes the world closer to global warming — a topic he explores in his new book, Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence.

Radiation travelling far and wide in Japan

Elevated radiation levels widespread in eastern Japan, Unsafe levels of radioactive contamination have been reported from multiple sources throughout vast areas of eastern Japan in locations far away from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Smart Planet By David Worthington | June 17, 2011
Science Magazine cites data from the prefectural government of Iwate revealing radioactive cesium has traveled over 100 miles away from Fukushima. Pastoral grasses are contaminated beyond safety standards
Japanese scientists have begun to track background radiation levels independently, according to the magazine’s report. Levels are exceeding acceptable safety limits in many locations.
A “citizens’ map” of radiation levels is being maintained by a group of Japanese bloggers. Levels appear highest near Fukushima and toward its northwest. The vicinity around immediate southwest of the reactors shows elevated radiation, and a large pocket of contamination has settled further south in the outskirts of Tokyo……. http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/intelligent-energy/elevated-radiation-levels-widespread-in-eastern-japan/7160

VIDEO: Fukushima meltdowns, radiation into sea
VIDEO Japan Admits 3 Nuclear Meltdowns, More Radiation Leaked into Sea; U.S. Nuclear Waste Poses Deadly Risks, Democracy Now 11 June 11 Almost three months after the earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear disaster in Japan, new radiation “hot spots” may require the evacuation of more areas further from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility. Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency recently admitted for the first time that full nuclear meltdowns occurred at three of the plant’s reactors, and more than doubled its estimate for the amount of radiation that leaked from the plant in the first week of the disaster in March. “What they failed to mention is that they discharged an equally large amount into the ocean,” says our guest Robert Alvarez, former senior policy adviser to the U.S. Secretary of Energy. “As [the radiation] goes up the food chain, it accumulates. By the time it reaches people who consume this food, the levels are higher than they originally were when they entered the environment.” Alvarez also discusses his new report on the vulnerabilities and hazards of stored spent fuel at U.S. reactors in the United States. Then we go to Tokyo to speak with Aileen Mioko Smith, executive director of the group Green Action. She says citizens leading their own monitoring efforts are calling for additional evacuations, especially for young children and pregnant women. VIDEO: Save Italy from Berlusconi’s Nukes
VIDEO http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/news/Blogs/makingwaves/from-fukushima-kumi-asks-italians-to-save-ita/blog/35224 From Fukushima Kumi asks Italians to “Save Italy from Berlusconi’s Nukes” Greenpeace by Dietlind – June 10, 2011 On June 12 -13 Italians have the opportunity to say no! to nuclear power in their country. Berlusconi’s government has plans for 4 new reactors – but the people have demanded a referendum on the issue of nuclear energy. Surveys show that a majority of Italians are against it however, if less than 50% of the population participates, the referendum will be invalid, regardless the outcome.
I am currently in Japan and have just visited the area around Fukushima where radiation levels are dangerously high. Please watch this short video to learn more about what life is like for Japanese people in the region today. This should never happen – not in Ukraine, not in Japan and certainly not in la Bella Italia.
In the aftermath of Chernobyl in 1987, the Italian government wisely decided to abandon nuclear power. Nuclear energy is never safe – keep it out of Italy. If you know someone who can vote in Italy please encourage them do so

Images of Fukushima – fatigue of nuclear workers
PhotoBlog – Doctor describes fatigue of workers at Fukushima nuclear plan, PhotoBlog, David R Arnott 3 June 11, Newly released photographs taken by a doctor who has examined workers at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant show the difficult living conditions they have endured while battling to bring the situation under control.
ased June 2 by industrial medical doctor Takeshi Tanigawa, who examined the workers. The Japan Times reported that Ehime University professor Takeshi Tanigawa had visited the workers twice since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that triggered a series of meltdowns at the plant. He warned that there was an increased risk of accidents because the workers had suffered from chronic sleep deprivation and fatigue, the paper said.
Tanigawa also warned that workers were at risk of developing PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) due to what they had been through in the early days of the disaster, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. See more images of the disaster in our slideshow and more pictures related to Fukushima on PhotoBlog. PhotoBlog – Doctor describes fatigue of workers at Fukushima nuclear plant

Medical radiation has hidden dangers
Children, he says, face a lifetime of radiation procedures, and many studies suggest that the adverse effects of radiation are cumulative. So limiting radiation exposure, particularly if it’s not absolutely necessary, is a good idea.
AUDIO Reporting On Hidden Dangers Of Medical Radiation, NPR 17 May 11, “…..On Monday’s Fresh Air, Bogdanich discusses his ongoing Times seriesabout the medical and regulatory issues that have arisen as radiation therapies have become more ubiquitous in both dental and doctors’ offices.
“I think we made it clear [in the series] that these are wonderful devices [for treatment] that save countless lives, and people need to get it when they need them, but they need to ask questions,” he says. “People were not asking questions, and, frankly, doctors who were treating the patients were not giving the patients the information they needed.”…… Continue reading
