Nuclear power “like burning $20 bills to generate electricity”

see-this.wayIt was Wall Street, not environmentalists, that put the kibosh to nuclear power: McKibben http://www.mining.com/it-was-wall-street-not-environmentalists-that-put-the-kibosh-to-nuclear-power-mckibben-36270/ Michael Allan McCrae | December 9, 2012 People aren’t looking to nuclear power as a solution to global warming because building a plant is just too expensive, says American environmentalist and author Bill McKibben.

“Given what happened in Fukushima it seems entirely unlikely to me you are going to convince people to put these in,” McKibben told the Daily Dish in a recent  interview.

“[But] it wasn’t really environmentalists that put the kibosh on nuclear power, it was pretty much Wall Street. Nobody was willing to pay for these things.

“It’s like burning $20 bills to generate electricity.” McKibben admits there are few places like China where nuclear power is being built “for a variety of reasons.”

“But even in China they are putting in vastly more renewable energy than nuclear power because they can do it quickly, and they can do it economically.”

Akiko Yoshida, Friends of the Earth – Tokyo: This is the contamination survey in October this year.

The hot spots still remain in these areas and also in other cities in Fukushima.
The hotspots is moving from here to another place, but still remain there.
The government said that they do decontamination, but the effect of decontamination is very limited. […]
With the rain or with the wind, radioactive materials comes always into the city.

AUDIO: Indigenous campaign against Pinehouse uranium gag deal

Hear-Thishttp://www.cbc.ca/player/Radio/Local+Shows/Saskatchewan/ID/2310512792/ Committee for Future Generations on Pinehouse   2 Dec 12,  Two Pinehouse residents are campaigning against further nuclear development in the area.

This is happening in Canada.  Far from the extractive industries in emerging nations but in a “developed country” and on flag-canadaAboriginal land and with Indigenous people.  You will recognize the names of the same players.

The public is being alerted to a plan for a “Collaboration Agreement” between uranium giants Cameco & Areva and the community of Pinehouse in Northern Saskatchewan Although this agreement is being presented as an opportunity for Pinehouse to receive resources for investments in Community Investment, Workforce Development, Business Development and Community Engagement and Environmental Stewardship, it represents an exchange of money from the nuclear industry to Pinehouse with a promise from the community that its members will stop speaking out against current, proposed or future uranium mining projects in the area.  Critics are calling this a gag order.

Storm Warnings: Climate Change and Extreme Weather[Kindle Edition]

read-this-wayHttp://Www.Amazon.Com/Storm-Warnings-Climate-Extreme-Ebook/Dp/B00A3PJ9XQ/Ref=Sr_1_1?S=Digital-Text&Ie=UTF8&Qid=1353441437&Sr=1-1

Hurricanes. Blizzards. Flooding. Drought. If extreme events like these seem to be on the rise, it’s for apparent reason. The first three-quarters of 2012 brought the worst European winter in 25 years; massive flooding in Australia, Brazil and China; a deepening drought affecting over 50% of the US; and Hurricane Sandy inflicted massive damage on the Northeast US. The likelihood of these extreme weather events are increasingly being tied to anthropogenic—or manmade, mostly through overproduction of carbon dioxide—global warming. It’s no longer an abstract idea; it’s being felt locally, on every level.
This eBook, Storm Warnings: Climate Change and Extreme Weather, gives you the tools to better understand what’s behind climate change, what might be in store during the coming decades and how we can begin to reverse the detrimental effects mankind has had on the atmosphere. The first half of the book focuses on those unprecedented weather events and the science behind them, from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy to the collapse of glacial ice shelves in the Antarctic. Chapter 5 delves into greenhouse gas emissions and their effect on global warming, including an excellent piece by leading expert James Hansen, who exposes the main culprits of climate change. The last chapters focus on addressing and reducing the problems of climate change at both the public policy and local levels. In particular, Scientific American Editor David Biello lays out 10 solutions that include small changes we all can make in our daily lives—practical, but effective, consumer choices that add up. It might be a drop in the bucket, but every drop counts.

I’m sorry folks, I’m what you call a libertarian constitutionalist. Back when I was more ignorant 15 years ago I was all about nuclear power, but now they are rotting and falling apart and the corporations don’t care, they’re crazy.

People say well why do you have a guy on, an environmentalist, when you’re talking about the green movement… because they attachall this real reasonable stuff to something run by Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan that is a taxed based-system and so if we just fight the environmental movement, #1 it makes us look stupid and it’s not sophisticated. There’s a real environmental movement then there’s a clone of it, a counterfeit.

Nuclear power is a ticking time bomb that just keeps going off and now when they have leaks all the time in Nebraska or up in Canada, it’s a footnote now.
I believe that this is one of the greatest threats facing humanity is the fact that the nuclear industry is becoming collectively insane and self-destructive, and if they want to kill themselves that’s their business. They’re not going to kill me and my family.

Don’t trust World Health Organisation’s data on Fukushima health effects

Gundersen on WHO: I don’t trust their data — Garbage in, garbage out — I suspect hot particles and internal emitters are omitted, and radioactive releases underestimated http://enenews.com/gundersen-dont-trust-data-garbage-garbage-suspect-hot-particles-internal-emitters-left-radioactive-releases-underestimated November 25th, 2012

Follow-up to: Asahi: Cancer risk for infants near Fukushima plant has risen, says WHO — More tumors and cysts likely for young people

According to an email from Fairewinds’ chief engineer Arnie Gundersen:

Do you trust the WHO?

I don’t trust this data … my guess is that WHO underestimated the radiological deposition and releases, and thus came up with exposures that are too low. Also, I suspect they have omitted hot particles and internal emitters from their dose assumptions. The same thing happened at TMI.  Bad assumptions create low exposures. GIGO!

AUDIO: too costly to maintain nuclear reactors, whether operating or not

PODCAST: NOVEMBER 21, 2012; THANKSGIVING EDITION: FINANCIAL PRESSURES ARE AFFECTING SAFETY DECISIONS AT THE NATIONS NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS  HTTP://WWW.FAIREWINDS.COM/CONTENT/FAIREWINDS-PODCAST November 21, 2012 Arnie explains that Oyster Creek is the only nuclear plant in the US that lacks a modern High Pressure Safety Injection System.  This means that the recently discovered pipe crack in a 3 inch pipe at Oyster Creek would create a serious safety threat if it were to completely break.  Arnie also discusses the cost of operating nuclear plants, and how many nuclear plants around the country are no longer a low cost electric producer.  Finally, Arnie looks at the three nuclear plants with extended shutdowns (Ft. Calhoun, San Onofre and Crystal River) and concludes that the cost of maintaining large staffs when no electricity is being produced is not in the best interests of the ratepayers

AUDIO: Oyster Creek nuclear reactor to shut down permanently?

Gundersen: California reactor likely shut down forever — At least four other US nuke plants in trouble (AUDIO) http://enenews.com/gundersen-california-nuclear-reactor-shut-down-forever-video  Fairewinds Podcast, Nov. 21, 2012:
Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education:  We had 2 more in the last 2 weeks raise the issue of their not being financially viable. Oyster Creek isn’t the only reactor that’s experiencing financial problems, we’ve got Kewaunee we know about, but 2 others have popped up on the radar this week and they’re surprising because they’re newer reactors.

The Wolf Creek reactor announced it’s looking for a partner to share engineering with […] And Callaway said the same thing. Both of these are new reactors in the Midwest. They’re saying basically that the costs to run a nuclear reactor makes them uncompetitive in today’s environment. So we’ve had 4 reactors in the last month talking about they’re having trouble making economic sense about running. Kewaunee, Oyster Creek, Callaway, and Wolf Creek. And you’ve got to believe that there are others out there too.

Gundersen: San Onofre Unit 3 is likely shut down forever. And Unit 2 is going to be shut down for more than a year and likely never get to 100% power again.

Portable solar power generator saving the day still in New York

VIDEO: A Solar Thanksgiving for Battered Rockaways  http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2012/11/video-solar-thanksgiving-battered-rockaways?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+motherjones%2FTheBlueMarble+%28Mother+Jones+%7C+The+Blue+Marble%29
By Tim McDonnell and James West,  Nov. 21, Since Hurricane Sandy, the historic Belle Harbor Yacht Club in the Rockaways—one of New York City’s hardest-hit neighborhoods—has become an indispensable hub for supplies, volunteers, and a much-needed round of drinks. Three weeks after the storm, the oft-maligned Long Island Power Authority still hasn’t re-connected this building, not to mention its neighbors, back to the grid, leaving locals to face the prospect of a cold, dark Thanksgiving.

But outside, the sun is shining, and a trio of local solar power companies have seen an opportunity to bridge the gap left open by the electric utility. The yacht club, among several area buildings, is now plugged into a portable solar power generator, which frees volunteers from the endless gas lines that plague those dependent on traditional generators and leaves them ready to dish out hot plates of turkey and stuffing to the beleaguered community.

Youtube: Carl Sagan’s vision for our time

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLkC7ralR30   One of Carl Sagan’s most pertinent messages for humanity…… our small planet, at this moment, here we face a critical branch-point in the history. What we do with our world, right now, will propagate down through the centuries and powerfully affect the destiny of our descendants.

It is well within our power to destroy our civilization, and perhaps our species as well. If we capitulate to superstition, or greed, or stupidity we can plunge our world into a darkness deeper than time between the collapse of classical civilization and the Italian Renaissaince.

But, we are also capable of using our compassion and our intelligence, our technology and our wealth, to make an abundant and meaningful life for every inhabitant of this planet. To enhance enormously our understanding of the Universe, and to carry us to the
stars.” Carl Sagan explains the immensity of space and time. This clip
is from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos episode 8, “Journeys in Space and Time.”
