Unique radio program on nuclear issues – podcasts still available
Helen Caldicott, M.D. 5 Jan 2013, After four-and-half-years and 197 programs, If You Love This Planet will end with the broadcast of its last new episode on the week ending December 28, 2012.
I believe we have made a valuable contribution to the public debate on any number of important issues over the years. I have thoroughly enjoyed interviewing the most interesting and highly informed people on a variety of topics relevant to planetary and individual survival.
A new book of 25 of the interviews called Loving This Planet may interest you.
The time has come, however, for me, as its president to concentrate on other new initiatives of The Helen Caldicott Foundation, including an international symposium to be held at the New York Academy of Medicine on March 11-12, 2013 titled, “The Medical and Ecological Consequences of Fukushima” and to write a new book which I hope will be published in 2014.
The program archives will continue to be available for downloading on this website. http://ifyoulovethisplanet.org/
Youtube: The aftermath for Fukushima cleanup workers, and nearby villagers
What happened to the Fukushima 50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sshECHcEerI&feature=player_detailpage#t=107s 2 Jan 2013 The workers who stayed behind in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 were told by many at the time that they were going to die for their pains.
There were actually 300 of them but they worked in shifts of 50.
Tokyo correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports on what has happened to them – and the villages around the stricken reactor – since the disaster.

[…] “They have physical problems,” said Paul C. Garner, the plaintiffs’ attorney, in an interview with CNN affiliate KGTV in San Diego, the home port of the ship. “One of them is bleeding from his rectum; already, the others have problems with thyroid glands.”
Garner described the illnesses as “major health issues” during a telephone interview with CNN.
“Our best and brightest — who were hired to perform top service to our Navy — went there to provide humanitarian tasks and did not want to bargain their health and well being,” said Garner. “But the people running the power plant lied to them.” […]

Description: During our 2011 deployment on the USS Ronald Reagan, we went through a radiation plume after heading to help out Japan after the earthquake/tsunami. This is what we had to go through every time we came back off the flight deck. This was the only entry point from the flight deck.

Uranium Film Festival – first take Berlin, then Rio de Janeiro, May 2013
ART AND AWARENESS – URANIUM FILM FESTIVAL IN BERLIN http://www.sustainablepractice.org/2012/12/art-and-awareness-uranium-film-festival-in-berlin/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=art-and-awareness-uranium-film-festival-in-berlin December 28th, 2012 After taking place twice in Brazil, the International Uranium Film Festival came to Berlin in October 2012. The highlight of the festival was the screening of four movies about the nuclear disaster of Goiânia, 1987, one of them Cesium 137: The Nightmare of Goiânia (1990), a movie by already deceased Roberto Pires which had already won several awards at the 1990 Brasilia Film Festival. The present Brazilian directors Jorge Luiz Eduardo and Angelo Lima as well as producer Laura Pires took this opportunity to speak up against the Brazilian government and lacking response to the disaster.
The International Uranium Film Festival is the only film festival in the world dedicated to films about the whole nuclear fuel chain and radioactivity, from atomic bombs to Fukushima. The show in Berlin, 04-12 October, showcased more than 60 films. Besides the Brazilian, many other directors from other countries were also present and took part in an active discussion with the public. TheYellow Oscar, an award for the best and most important productions, went to Swedish film director Marko Kattilakoski and his crew for the short film Fikapaus (Coffeebreak). The next stop of the festival will be India in January and February 2013 visiting seven different cities.
Call for Entry – Third Uranium Film Festival in Rio de Janeiro, May 2013
The International Uranium Film Festival of Rio de Janeiro accepts short and feature length films and videos in the following categories: narrative, documentary, experimental, animation for the competitions.
Deadline for the Film Entry: January 31, 2013.

Decontamination is for hiding the fact, fallout from Fukushima incinerator plant, Dec 2012, a thorough decontamination work is being conducted around “Healthy Land Fukushima”. Vast amounts of plastic container bags are piled up for a small area decontamination. Contaminations, surface soil, vegetation, falllen leaves, dust with radioactive particles are stuffed in them. They removed tree barks for reducing radiation level. It’s very odd.

Some question if this cleanup is really worth it.
Critics, including some academics in Japan, experts on radiation and nuclear energy, call efforts like these meaningless. Using high pressure hoses spreads the radiation.

Marion Pack: I also had a friend that worked out there at the Perry power plant and he was a welder. And he was telling me what I considered real horror stories in that he said all the wells had to be photographed and documented. But when they found flaws in the well they were doctoring the photographs. […]
Host Helen Caldicott, MD: That’s what happened with Karen Silkwood you know, she was a whistleblower […] they were making fuel rods with plutonium in them and photographing them and the abnormalities in the fuel rods they were doctoring the photographs, not the rods. And she was driving with the documentation in the backseat of the car to meet a NY Times reporter when she was killed on the way. When they got to the car the documents were missing.

Podcast on Japan’s nuclear plants’ risks from earthquakes
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF SITING A NUCLEAR PLANT IN A SEISMICALLY ACTIVE AREA? December 9, 2012 http://www.fairewinds.com/content/fairewinds-podcastAUDIO: Fukushima’s spent nuclear fuel racks likely to be damaged by recent earthquake
Gundersen: M7 quake likely caused damage to spent fuel racks at Fukushima Daiichi AUDIO http://enenews.com/gundersen-m7-quake-caused-damage-spent-fuel-racks-fukushima-daiichi-video December 11th, 2012
Fairewinds Podcast, Dec. 9, 2012:
Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education: The fuel racks are going to be damaged. What that means is the box of spaghetti is going to be dented.
So when they go in to try to pull the fuel out, they’re not going to be able to, some of that fuel is going to be stuck, like spaghetti stuck in a box.
An earthquake like this most recent one likely caused more damage, or it caused more crap to fall into the pool. And as particles fall into the pool again it’s going to change the friction that’s required to pull out this spaghetti in the box — to pull out the nuclear fuel.
I think what they’re going to see is they’ll go down with this long handle and try to grab the fuel on the top and if the fuel is undamaged and the rack is undamaged it slides out pretty easily. If the fuel is bent or if the rack is bent, it doesn’t. So what they can do is they can crank up the power and pull a little harder. The problem is that this is spent fuel so it’s brittle, and if they pull too hard they’re likely to snap the fuel and what that can mean is a gaseous release of radiation.
So that was a long prelude to answer your question, why are they building these roofs over the fuel pool? Is that they’re afraid that when they come to pull the nuclear fuel, they’re going to snap some of the bundles and they’re going to release radioactive gases.
