“You couldn’t find a more perfect radioactive storm … I am alarmed about this on many levels. This raises concerns, not only about the existing leak … but also concerning the integrity of the other single shell tanks of this age.” -Gov. Jay Inslee
The long-delayed cleanup of the nation’s most contaminated nuclear site became the subject of more bad news Friday, when Washington Gov. Jay Inslee announced that a radioactive waste tank there is leaking.
On Friday, the U.S. Department of Energy said liquid levels are decreasing in one of 177 underground tanks at the site.
[…] Inslee said the tank is the first to have been documented to be losing liquids since all Hanford tanks were stabilized in 2005. His staff said the federal government is working to assess other tanks. […]
“We’re out of time, obviously. These tanks are starting to fail now,” said Tom Carpenter of the Hanford watchdog group Hanford Challenge. “We’ve got a problem. This is big.” […]

Tri-CityHerald, Feb. 19, 2013: Donna Busche accused contractor Bechtel National and subcontractor URS Energy and Construction of working to fire her in retaliation for raising safety issues concerning the operation of the $12.3 billion vitrification plant — charges the company denies.
KLCC Eugene Oregon NPR, Feb. 18, 2013: Donna Busche, is the manager of environmental and nuclear safety for URS. That’s another top contractor on the waste treatment plant project. This month she filed a whistleblower lawsuit against Bechtel and her own company. She’s especially concerned about the plant’s complicated pre-treatment facility. Donna Busche: “I think there are serious issues with the quality, throughout the design and fabrication of that plant. When you have quality indeterminate and safety indeterminate, in the nuclear business, those must be addressed – with unwavering commitment to do the right thing. So I do not believe we have a safety basis for the pretreatment facility.”

[…] Fairewinds Chief Engineer Arnie Gundersen and special guest David Lochbaum, the Director of Nuclear Safety for the Union of Concerned Scientists, compare experiences about how nuclear whistleblowers are NOT protected by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission if they bring safety concerns forward. They will also discuss examples citing instances of the NRC failing to support the legitimate concerns of whistleblowers in the nuclear industry, including inside the NRC itself.
Uranium Film Festival an eye- opener for Indian audiences
Eye-opening films http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/on-campus/eyeopening-films/article4427616.ece ANKITA CHAUDHURI, 17 Feb 13
Congenital deformities in newborns, genetic mutation, infertility, high rate of early mortality, cancer and other diseases are tell-tale signs of nuclear contamination.
A three-day film festival dedicated to independent films on nuclear power and the whole fuel chain questioned the value of human life and brings to fore the “callousness of authorities who ignore its dangerous impact”.
The aim was to spread awareness through cinema on issues such as uranium mining, nuclear power plants, nuclear medicine, nuclear waste, atomic bombs and radioactive hazards.
There are 19 nuclear reactors in India which generate 4,560 MW, with four more such plants being constructed. As India is becoming technologically advanced, the use of nuclear power for generating electricity is fast gaining momentum.
The festival sought to address the flipside of nuclear energy production and consumption. The probability of a nuclear accident may be very low but is not zero. Continue reading

One guy has testicular cancer he was aboard the Reagan, he’s 21, he had one of his testicles removed already.
You know what their talking points are, the Tepco people and those in power? It’s all low-level radiation, nothing to worry about. It’s too little to worry about. […] If they get away with this then what did we fight Watergate for?

Her fetus, her baby is now a couple of years old and doesn’t speak.
I’m not an expert, but experts say the fetus takes up most of the radiation, more than the mother does.

See this: low cost boadband Internet – solar powered – for rural Africa
Video: Microsoft Providing Low-Cost, Solar-Powered Broadband Access In Africa http://www.energymatters.com.au/index.php?main_page=news_article&article_id=3595 15 Feb 13, Early this month, Microsoft Corp announced the launch of a pilot project delivering low-cost wireless broadband access in parts of Kenya via solar-powered base stations.
A project carried out in collaboration with the government of Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communications and Indigo Telecom Ltd., the network utilizes TV white spaces to carry broadband signals to previously unserved locations near Nanyuki and Kalema. The project is the first deployment of TV white space technology in Africa.
TV white spaces are well-suited for delivering low-cost broadband access as radio signals in the TV bands can be transmitted over longer distances and penetrate more obstacles than other types of radio signals. As a result, fewer base stations are required.
Microsoft says that as television has begun to switch from analog to digital around the world, even more of this spectrum can be used to relay broadband.
More than 6,000 people will benefit from the project; which is part of theMicrosoft 4Afrika Initiative. In addition, solar power systems with deep cycle battery energy storage will be installed at local schools to supply electricity to their Information & Communication Technology (ICT) labs. Each system will generate 4.5 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy per day, which should provide a small surplus of power above what is required for each lab.
While 4.5 kilowatt hours doesn’t sound like a great deal, it will be sufficient for students to use tablets and eReaders in the labs.
“Solar power addresses the issue of reliability in developing economies and carries low operating costs since panels last a long time and batteries can function for up to three years,” says a statement from Microsoft.
“That makes solar an increasingly affordable way to deliver power, especially in areas that lack infrastructure for both electricity transmission and broadband access.”

Date: Feb 9 2013,
The storm that dumped two feet of snow on western Massachusetts treated the eastern part of the state more harshly. More than 400,000 customers in eastern Massachusetts are beginning their Saturday morning without power, and the state’s only nuclear power plant had to shut down. […]
The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth had to be shut down because the plant’s own in-house system had also lost power due to the blizzard conditions.
About three feet of snow fell in some parts of the Boston area, and 28” of snow had already fallen in parts of central Connecticut.
A similar statement was read during the news broadcast: “Even the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth had to be shut down because the plant’s in-house system had also lost power during the storm.”
The AP reports “the NRC says the nuclear power plant experienced an automatic shutdown at around 9:15 p.m. Friday after losing off-site power”.

VIDEO documentary reveals secrets of Chernobyl nuclear disaster
it is thanks to these men that the worst was avoided; a second explosion, ten times more powerful than Hiroshima which would have wiped out more than half of Europe. This was kept secret for twenty years by the Soviets and the West alike.
As time went on millions of people suffered radiation related health problems such as leukemia and thyroid cancer and around 4,000 people have died as a result of the long-term effects of the accident.
VIDEO http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/the-battle-of-chernobyl/#disqus_thread The Battle of Chernobyl It’s a documentary which analyzes the Thursday 26th April 1986 that became a momentous
date in modern history, when one of the reactors at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in northern Ukraine, exploded. It was the most significant reactor failure in the history of nuclear power, a Maximum Credible Accident (MCA). Continue reading
Earth Focus Episode 32 – Nuclear Power: Risks and Consequences
linktv
Uploaded on Oct 28, 2011
(Earth Focus: Episode 32) Nuclear Power: Risks and Consequences, an original Earth Focus investigative report, looks at the untold stories behind three of the world’s largest nuclear disasters: Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima. According to government and industry officials, no one died as a result of Three Mile Island and only low doses of radiation — equivalent to a single chest XRay were released.
But many local residents disagree and cite medical evidence that radiation released from the Three Mile Island reactor was severe enough to cause disease and death. It’s been 30 years but the controversy continues. Chernobyl was the worse nuclear disaster in history.
A new book, Chernobyl: Consequences of a Catastrophe says that almost a million people died as a result of the nuclear accident — not 4,000 as The World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency claim. A screw up or a coverup? Earth Focus looks at evidence that links radioactive exposure to diminished intelligence, premature aging and a variety of other health conditions.
Given the severity of the accident in Fukushima and the inability of the government to provide action to safeguard large portions of its population, the Japanese government moved the goal posts on what is considered safe radiation exposure for children and nuclear workers.
Japanese organized crime, the Yakuza, is now becoming actively involved in the cleanup of radioactive waste.

Nuclear energy is responsible for powering nearly 20 percent of the
US, and in Southern California the San Onofre nuclear power plant has
created much debate in the surrounding community.
The station has been closed for about a year due to a leak that was
detected in the steam generator tubes, but despite the wishes of the
people living the area to keep the plant closed, the utility company
is pushing to bring the reactor back online.
Arnie Gundersen, chief engineer for Fairewinds Energy Education,
analyzes the situation.
