We will protest the re-opening of Canyon Uranium Mine on Native sacred lands by praying, bannering, and peacefully demonstrating. This is a call out to all peaceful warriors to come, pray, and decide how to stop the mine. A base camp has already been set up on Hwy 64, approx. 45 miles north of Williams, AZ (First right after mile marker 219). More camping is available very nearby at the prayer/ceremony site near Red Butte, and also in the high Ponderosas of the National Forest near Canyon Mine itself. Gather now to protect the Grand Canyon, the Colorado Plateau, and the waters, animals, plants and people who live here. Also on the 21st, the head of the Sierra club is to meet at 10 am with some of the Havasupai elders, who will be coming up out of the Canyon, at the mine site itself. Red Butte and the Grand Canyon are sacred to several tribes in this region. Energy Fuels must stop digging NOW! Idle No More has called for Friday, June 21st, to be International Indigenous Solidarity Day. Come and help!
This will be our first, opening action and is a three day event. Come prepared for hot days (up to 90) and cool nights (down to 40). Please bring your own water, food and banner and sign-making materials beginning as early as June 19. We do have some food and some banner-making materials, but will need more. What is Nuclear Abolition Week?
On 6 – 13 July 2013 Nuclear Abolition Week kicks off with activities across the world for a ban on nuclear weapons. This global week of action is intended to raise awareness of the unacceptable harm caused by nuclear weapons, and the urgent need for a ban treaty.
During this week, ICAN campaigners from all around the world will take to the streets, meet with policymakers, organise public meetings and more to show their government that they expect full-fledged support for a treaty banning nuclear weapons.
In previous years, ICAN has organised Nuclear Abolition Day, featuring non-violent street demonstrations, benefit concerts and recitals, nuclear picnics, vigils, marches, educational workshops and film screenings (click here to see photos from 2012 actions). This year, reflecting the growth of the campaign, Nuclear Abolition Day has been transformed into a global week of action.
Nine world premieres at Rio Uranium Film Festival
nine world premieres, including “Abita, Children from Fukushima,” an animated short from Germany about children in Fukushima who can’t play outside, “High Power,” a documentary about the thousands of people displaced by the construction of India’s first nuclear power plant, and “Caetité, Suffering in Shades of Grey,” a documentary about the status of Brazil’s second uranium mining operation in Catité, Bahia.

The third installment of the festival will take place in the Cinemateque of the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) and will include fifty-two films from twenty different countries about the nuclear fuel chain, radioactivity, and nuclear war, as well as an international roundtable on uranium mining and a photo exhibition showing the harmful effects of the controversial mining process in Jadugoda, India.
Since its 2011 inception in Rio de Janeiro, the International Uranium Film Fest has expanded to four countries and over twenty cities. The petition says MidAmerican Energy has bought 800 acres of farmland in rural areas with plans to build a Nuclear Power Plant. It also states that MidAmerican Energy has denied any Nuclear Power Plant plans.
Dangerous effects that nuclear materials have on the environment and community are highlighted in the petition. Also noted are environmentally-friendly strides that have been taken for the future.
The petition has more than half of the signatures needed on Change.org.
Anti nuclear walk to Oyster Creek nuclear plant

100% renewable energy – it’s happenng
These are just a handful of examples in what amounts to the beginnings of a global movement. Go100Percent.org, a project launched to track 100% renewable energy projects around the world, has mapped more than 8 Countries, 41 Cities, 48 Regions, 8 Utilities, and 21 NonProfit/Educational/Public Institutions that have shifted or are committed to shifting within the next few decades to 100% renewable energy in at least one sector.
Basic logic says that non-renewable energy, by definition, is finite and will run out.

By Diane Moss, Founding Director of Renewables 100 Policy Institute A decade ago, cities, regions, and businesses aiming for 20% renewable energy were on the cutting edge. Few believed that a higher target in a few decades was an achievable goal. Anyone even suggesting a target of 100% renewable energy was a radical. Fast forward to today and in much of Europe, and increasingly in the U.S. and the developing world, 100% renewable energy goals are becoming the new normal.
Entire countries like Denmark have passed laws requiring that the whole energy supply — electricity, heating/cooling, and transportation — be met by renewable resources. The Pacific island of Tokelau, which risks disappearing as climate change raises sea levels, is one nation that has already met the goal of 100% renewable energy supply, throwing down the gauntlet to far larger polluters around the world who are truly causing the problem.
Iceland is almost there, with 100% renewable electricity and 81% renewable energy overall.
Scotland has a mandate to achieve 100% renewable power supply by 2020.
Upper Austria, inspired by the town of Guessing, which is already there, has a target to achieve 100% renewable heat and power by 2030.
Whole regions in Germany are already meeting, if not surpassing, their power demand with renewables. Several have done the same for their heating requirements, and are busy working toward targets for integrating the transportation sector.
In the U.S, cities like San Francisco, Lancaster, and San José have set official goals to reach 100% renewable power within the next decade, and the state of Vermont has an energy plan in place to reach 90% renewable energy in all sectors by mid century. The heartland town of Greensburg, KS has already reached a 100% renewable power goal set after being destroyed by a tornado in 2007, and aims to achieve renewable energy for all sectors.
Additionally, businesses including IKEA, Whole Foods, and Google are aiming to power, or already are powering, their companies with 100% renewable energy technologies. Continue reading

“Stop the budget hike for the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant! Stop dangerous nuclear energy,” dozens of people representing a number of environmental groups, including the Green Citizens’ Action Alliance, Nuclear Free Homeland Alliance and Citizen of the Earth Taiwan, chanted during a press conference on Ketagalan Boulevard in front of the Presidential Office in Taipei.
“Through our action, we demand the government stop injecting more money into the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant; stop unsafe nuclear energy programs; stop operations at the first, second and third nuclear power plants as soon as possible; and move nuclear waste out of Lanyu (蘭嶼) immediately,” Green Citizens’ Action Alliance secretary-general Tsuei Su-hsin (崔愫欣) told the press conference. Many of the Indian and foreign films to be screened at the festival are critically acclaimed, international award-winning documentaries.
Scheduled to be held from 6 to 9.30 pm, the festival is dedicated to films about Uranium and the possible dangers it poses to the environment and the survival of humanity from both its military and peaceful uses. The festival includes documentary and fiction films on issues like Uranium mining, nuclear power plants, atomic bombs, nuclear waste, radioactive risks, nuclear medicine, Hiroshima, Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima.Waste from nuclear power plants remains radioactive for more than one lakh years. The films screened will raise questions like how our coming generations will protect themselves from this deathly waste. The festival will stimulate discussions and encourage the production of new documentaries, movies and animated films about the nuclear or radioactive issue.
The international festival was inaugurated in New Delhi on January 4 and has made its way to Mumbai from cities like Shillong, Ranchi, Manipal, Hyderabad, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai and Thrissur.
The Mumbai edition of the festival is being presented by the 7 Islands Film Festival, sponsored by Yusuf Meherally Centre, Shrividya Sansthan and Bhawan’s Cultural Centre, and supported by NGOs Janhit Seva Samiti, Konkan Bachao Samiti, Konkan Vinashkari Prakalp Virodhi Samiti, Muktiyaan Loksanskritik Sanghatana and other anti-nuclear activists in the city. South Dakota uranium mining bills – all deferred, Dakota Rural Action February 7, 2013 by sking86 Over 20 people have traveled today to Pierre to testify on SBs 148-150. These three bills would restore adequate oversight to in situ leach uranium mining in South Dakota.
It is clear that the Senate committee is unwilling to stand in the way of development, even if it is permanently damaging and harmful, if it in any way prevents the “economic development” of the Black Hills.
Despite impassioned, moving speeches by long-time ranchers, experts, and lobbyists, the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee dismissed all three bills.
The reasons the Senate committee voted down these bills are, point blank, wrong. Absolutely, whole-heartedly, wrong. In voting down SB 148, excuses about lack of funding and expanding government were made. If our water matters, we should allocate the funding. People, South Dakotas citizens, are asking for this. FUKUSHIMA TWO YEARS LATER: Global symposium to address mounting medical & ecological consequences March 11-12 – New York Academy of Medicine
[New York – January 24, 2013] Two years after the March 11, 2011 triple meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex, new research and new information continues to come to light about its continuing bio-medical and ecological consequences, how they compare with Chernobyl, and what they indicate about the impact of nuclear power on public health, safety, and the environment.
A unique public symposium, “The Medical and Ecological Consequences of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident,” will be held on March 11-12 at the New York Academy of Medicine to explore the latest data and its implications. A project of The Helen Caldicott Foundation, the symposium is being co-sponsored by Physicians for Social Responsibility.
The Japanese Prime Minister during the Fukushima crisis, Naota Kan, will open the symposium with a special videotaped message. He will be followed by another video message from his key nuclear adviser at that time, Dr. Hiroshi Tasaka, who counseled the government on how to stop the acute phase of the accident, and on reforming nuclear regulation and energy policy in its wake.
Then an international group of some of the world’s leading experts – including several from Japan and the U.S. — in radiation biology, embryology, epidemiology, oceanography, nuclear engineering, and nuclear policy will make presentations and participate in panel discussions. Among them are Dr. KenBuesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute; Dr. Hisaku Sakiyama, a member of the Japanese Diet’s Fukushima Accident Independent Investigative Commission; Dr. Alexey Yablokov of the Russian Academy of Sciences; and many others (see below for a list of presenters).
