Anti nuclear protest rally in Toledo, Ohio

Anti-nuclear activists rally in Promenade Park, By Dick Berry,TOLEDO, OH (WTOL), 1 Oct 11 – Anti-nuclear activists rallied Saturday in Downtown Toledo’s Promenade Park. They called for the closure of nuclear power plants like Davis Besse and production of more green energy.
The keynote speaker was Democratic Cleveland Congressman Dennis Kusinich. He says Americans need to ditch nuclear power and develop less expensive forms of energy, such as wind and solar technology.
“We could create millions of jobs doing that. We have to look at how we can get our energy going again, protect the jobs we have now and get our economy going again using new energy development.”….
“The technology is there with wind and solar. It’s just a matter of us having the political will to do it” says Michael Leonardi of the Toledo Coalition for Safe Energy…. http://www.wtol.com/story/15596725/anti-nuclear-activists-rally-in-promenade-park
Put nuclear plant in Tokyo – say protestors
About 50 anti-nuclear power demonstrators shouted: “Let’s build a nuclear power plant in Tokyo!”
“If they are not lying about nuclear safety, they might as well bring a nuclear power plant to Tokyo, right?” said organiser Angelo De Rosa, a 45-year-old Italian language teacher based in Tokyo. “In this rally, I also want to question if the government has provided people correct information on nuclear safety.”
The rally came a week after tens of thousands held one of the biggest anti-nuclear demonstrations in Tokyo, calling for an end to nuclear energy after the March 11 disaster sparked the worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl.
Demonstrators at Sunday’s rally carried banners showing remarks of authorities, politicians and professors that organisers said promoted nuclear power.
The crowds also mocked several politicians and scientists, including a Fukushima Medical University professor who reportedly said that radiation does not affect people who smile. With widespread public distrust of nuclear technology, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has pledged a shift away from atomic power, which accounted for a third of Japan’s energy supply before the disaster. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gSEdloFcehuqDDOaf2HPlJCeH1fQ?docId=CNG.b1c65bdc1e0bef497e1f81f732897709.ce1
Kudankulam nuclear power project in earthquake prone area

‘Project unwise as area quake-prone’, Times of India, TNN | Sep 26, 2011, MADURAI: Activists opposing the Kudankulam nuclear power plant have alleged that the implementing authority has violated certain essential rules in the establishment of the project. He urged the state government either to suspend or cancel the NOC granted to the plant. Continue reading

Watchdog groups press NRC chairman to release damning internal dissent
DURHAM, N.C. — In a legal motion filed today, watchdog groups pressed the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to terminate the approval process for the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor design. The groups said that a growing list of mistakes and omissions — and a 19th version of the experimental design filed just this week by the company — prove that the “rulemaking” process to approve the ever-changing design is legally “null and void.” Continue reading
People’s continued fight to shut down Japan’s nuclear industry

even though Congressman Takano isn’t getting much support in the Japanese government for his campaign to shut down the country’s nuclear power plants, he is getting more attention from the public, and for now, that’s good enough, as he wants to mostly spread the word on a grassroots level, beyond his community and beyond the Tohoku region…..
Fighting for a radiation- free Japan, Aj Jazeera, D. Parvaz 16 Sep 2011 Communities in the Tohoku region are struggling for information, decontamination and a say in future policies…. The radiation contamination has created a pristine post-apocalyptic postcard, a place where no one is allowed to live and farmers are forbidden from growing anything. It will be years before the full extent of damage to area residents and ecosystem alike will be known…..” Continue reading

Anti-nuclear plant protesters in Tamil Nadu turn down Jayalalithaa appeal, THE ECONOMIC TIMES, 17 SEP, 2011, , JOE A SCARIA, CHENNAI: Protestors from three southern districts in Tamil Nadu have refused to give up their demand to shut down what is poised to be the nation’s newest nuclear power plant coming up in Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram made a “kind appeal” to the protestors, including 127 people who are on a fast that entered the sixth day on Friday, to end their protest. She said the power plant had ensured all safety parameters, and that it was situated in the second zone of seismic activity where earthquakes were unlikely.
The protestors have turned down her plea. “The CM’s request was disappointing for all of those who are here demanding closure of the plant”, Amal Raj, a volunteer of the People’s Movement against Nuclear Energy which is spearheading the agitation against the nuke project told ET.
Among those who have thrown their weight behind the agitation to have the plant shut, is the local Radhapuram MLA, Michael Rayappan of DMDK, which was an ally of the ruling AIADMK in the assembly poll. … http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics/nation/anti-nuclear-plant-protesters-in-tamil-nadu-turn-down-jayalalithaa-appeal/articleshow/10012764.cms
