Nuclear lobby’s latest gimmick – making nuclear BEAUTIFUL !

Making nuclear power plants look great, World Nuclear News, 01 December 2023

They must be desperate. They’ve tried – renewable, -clean, – safe – cheap, – nothing-to-do-with weapons

They’re still lying their heads off about –fixes climate change

Nobody believes them. Now they’re going for beautiful and feel-good.

Good luck with that.

Amber Rudd, a previous UK Minister for Energy tried that, years ago, and it went down like a lead balloon.

We hear from an award-winning architect on the benefits of designing nuclear power plants that make people feel good ....

Technology and function, ensuring their reliable and safe operation have long been the priorities when designing nuclear power plants. But why can’t they look beautiful too?  Dutch architect and designer Erick van Egeraat says that part of the way to continue to build public support for nuclear energy is to make nuclear power plants look good, “to make people feel good” when they see them.

The award-winning professor and director of Design Erick van Egeraat outlined his thinking at World Nuclear Symposium, explaining the background to the work he is doing at Akkuyu nuclear power plant, which is being built in Turkey.

  1. How about calling nuclear power “green?” They have tried “greenwashing,” it also. No one has factored in the amount of fossil fuel or electricity that is used to mine, extract, refine, fabricate, build, transport the nuclear fuel, nuclear wastes or the heavy construction building machinery, i.e. bulldozers, cranes, dump trucks etc to construct the old boiling water, pressurized water and the new hyped, SMR reactors. Nuclear power is not the panacea to climate change. It is not safe, not cheap and there are existing renewable energy alternatives that are more cost effective and faster to construct and implement. The “Soft Energy Path” of solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, tidal, ocean & river current, battery storage, green hydrogen fuel cell, iron-chromium flux capacitors, battery storage, public rail, electric bus, electric cars, trucks and yes airplanes, passive & active solar buildings, retrofiting, more energy efficient machines & buildings, recycling of materials will help prevent continued green house gas emissions, and transition to a sustainable future where we hopefully will have enough time to reverse and mitigate the impact of carbon emissions and reverse climate change. That is if the profit addicted fossil fuel, nuclear power, and centralized for profit electric utilities get out of the way and start caring more about the planet’s environment & ecosystem then maximizing profits.

    • Thank you paulrodenlearning, for the reminder about “green’. Very remiss of me to forget that wonderful nuclear weasel-word lie.
