The real cost of France’s reliance on nuclear energy?
France will build new nuclear reactors, announces the head of state. For
what economic cost? Is it cheaper than relying on 100% renewable energy? No
unbiased answer is possible at this point.

Those aren’t the only options. With France’s current and growing levels of energy use, 100% renewable sources (hydro, wind and solar) are far from adequate and never will be. Unless France and the rest of the wealthy nations decide to end capitalism and to drastically reduce their overall energy use, they will need more reliable and more energy-dense sources. We abandoned wind power in the 19th century in favour of coal and then oil for perfectly rational reasons, the main one being the density of the energy being produced. The same choice faces us now. My choice is socialism and massive reductions in energy use. That’s hugely unpopular.
