Southeast Asia can leapfrog uncompetitive nuclear energy, and go straight to renewables

World Nuclear Industry Status Report 6th April 2021, Other than to have mercy on soon-to-be-unemployed nuclear engineers, there is not a single reason why Southeast Asia shouldn’t leapfrog nuclear energy.

Dangerous and expensive, the technology simply isn’t worth the hassle. Desperate to save itself from decline, the nuclear sector has peddled the myth that nuclear energy—clean, reliable and cost-effective as it allegedly is—is key to decarbonising the global economy.

Except it isn’t. Economics have long conspired against the industry as it built ever larger and more complex reactors. From China to the United States, projects have run years behind schedule, leading to budget overruns, and rendering the technology uncompetitive.
