Uncertainty over safety of Russia’s floating nuclear power plants

Floating Nuclear Power Plants: Solution or Nightmare?, Homeland Security,  By Dr. Brian Blodgett, Faculty Member, Homeland Security, American Military University,18 Jul 19, Russia continues to project its power north of the Arctic Circle with the launch of the Akademik Lomonosov, a floating barge with two 35-megawatt nuclear reactors. Icebreakers will tow the Akademik Lomonosov along the Northern Sea Route, from Murmansk to Pevek.

Once the Akademik Lomonosov arrives at Pevek, the Russians will decommission the 48-megawatt, Bilibino land-based nuclear power plant that entered operation in 1974. Currently, this reactor generates most of the electricity for Russia’s autonomous, mineral-rich Chukotka region in the far northern area of Siberia.

The Akademik Lomonosov will be over 4,200 miles from Moscow but less than 1,250 miles upwind of Anchorage, Alaska.

Floating Nuclear Power Plants Have Been Used Before

The concept of floating nuclear power plants is not new. ….

Use of Akademik Lomonosov Causing Environmental Concerns

Environmentalists are worried about the radioactive steam that the Akademik Lomonosov’s reactors will produce. The radioactivity could have adverse effects on the local populace.

Additionally, there is a concern about an earthquake-triggered tsunami destroying the Akademik Lomonosov.Such a tsunami would cause a release of radioactive material and fuel into not only the air but also the water, impacting marine life.

Russia Not Worried about Nuclear Disasters with the Akademik Lomonosov

Russia dismisses environmental concerns since it has over 50 years of experience in safeguarding nuclear-powered Arctic icebreakers……

Recently, there have been revelations that the Soviet nuclear submarine K-278 Komsomolets that sunk over 30 years ago is now releasing radiation levels 800,000 times higher than expected. As a result, there is a concern of what would occur if the Akademik Lomonosov was to sink into the Arctic waters that enter the Pacific near Alaska and then flow down our western coast.

Additionally, the recent fire on the unnamed Russian AS-12 submarine that occurred on July 1, resulting in the death of 14 crewmembers, reminds the world how dangerous nuclear power can be. According to a comment reportedly made by a high-ranking military official at their funeral, the servicemen averted a “planetary catastrophe” before they died………

2011 Japanese Nuclear Accident Serving as Disaster Model……..   A meltdown occurring on the Akademik Lomonosov or any future sister nuclear floating platforms could be much worse for the local population and the environment. While the remoteness of Pevek will complicate crucial security procedures, such as the routine disposal of nuclear fuel to rescue operations, it will also limit the spread of deadly radiation.

But with Rosatom avidly seeking future countries as partners in spreading nuclear power to areas with electrical needs, such as New Jersey considered doing in the 1960s, only time will provide us with proof that floating nuclear power plants are a potential solution to energy needs.https://inhomelandsecurity.com/floating-nuclear-power-plants-solution-or-nightmare/

San Onofre nuclear power station: nuclear waste moves from wet pools to dry storage

Nuclear waste moves from wet pools to dry storage at San Onofre

1 down, 43 to go before the plant’s cooling pools are empty and its dry storage system is full By TERI SFORZA | tsforza@scng.com | Orange County Register July 18, 2019  It took the better part of two days, but Canister No. 30 — a 50-ton behemoth full of spent nuclear waste — was successfully moved from a fuel-handling building, rolled across the bluff on a giant transporter, then inserted into its steel-and-concrete vault in the Holtec Hi-Storm UMAX dry storage system at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The delicate, deliberate dance was originally projected to wrap up by early morning Wednesday, July 17, but finished up about 6 a.m. Thursday. And as far as majority owner and operator Southern California Edison is concerned, that’s just fine and dandy……..

Critics continue to worry about the integrity of those canisters — which have scratches from their descent into the vaults — over what could be decades in the San Onofre’s salty seaside atmosphere. They demand that the waste be moved from what they deride as a “beachfront nuclear waste dump” immediately, but that requires action from a federal government that has dithered on the issue for some 70 years.

The road to here

San Onofre’s reactors powered down in 2012 after tubes in its brand-new steam generators cracked, resulting in a small radiation leak. After local opposition to restarting it appeared insurmountable, San Onofre was shuttered for good in 2013.

The plant will be dismantled – a $4 billion job that’s expected to take at least another decade – and all the spent fuel currently cooling in its spent fuel pools will be transferred to dry storage by next year……..  https://www.ocregister.com/2019/07/18/nuclear-waste-moves-from-wet-pools-to-dry-storage-at-san-onofre/

The radioactively polluted oceans

Radionuclide-Inundated Oceans    https://www.opednews.com/articles/Radionuclide-Inundated-Oce-by-ed-tanner-Ocean-Acidification_Ocean-Currents_Ocean-Energy_Ocean-Pollution-190712-791.html– OpEdNews Op Eds 7/12/2019 By ed tanner Only God knows how much radioactive waste has run off, from the continental United States and Asia, into the oceans. Only the gods know how many barrels of nuclear waste from countries like France, the USA, and Russia have been carted out on freighters into the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and dumped. The French blew up a Greenpeace ship by New Zealand for dogging one of France’s nuclear-waste dumping freighters.

The Russians continue to have the least-contained, most-dangerous reactor designs in the world running on undependable mox [a type of nuclear fuel] made in Mayak. Two Russian reactors may have already gone off since Chernobyl. You will not hear about that. There were elevated radiation readings in Europe, since Fukushima, that came from Russia and stunk of high-level reactor releases.

Busby used a gamma spectrometer off the coast of the Baltic Sea by Russia and found that cesium 134 and 137 levels were twice as high, post Chernobyl, as they should be, in 2017.

America is a radioactive crudhole with places like Hanford, Three-Mile Island, and multiple open-air nuclear tests for decades. Ninety-seven of the leakiest, oldest, most cracked and brittle nuclear reactors in the world. Tens of thousands of tons of the worst high-level nuclear waste are spread across the USA.

Now think about Russia and Japan and the Arctic ocean and Pacific ocean for a minute.

Many places in Russia are so radioactive that one cannot stand for 30 minutes without dropping dead. Russia has the distinction of being one of the most radioactive countries on earth! Up there with Japan and many places in America.

The CIA will tell you about Russia’s shrinking demographics, but they will not tell the truth about it.

Half the men and women in Russia have fertility problems from massive radionuclide contamination. The CIA says it is from an aging Russian population and bad Russian economy. I knew a Russian doctor that was in a port where a Russian sub blew in the late ’80s. She has had dysmenorrhea and has been bleeding since then.

The Russians run nuclear-powered ice breakers in the Arctic. America is a radioactive shithole and so is Russia. The Russians have dumped two hundred thousand tons of high-level nuclear waste in the Arctic ocean. That includes the old nuclear reactors it has pushed into the Arctic and Baltic oceans and the old nuclear submarines there. Altogether there are probably a half a million tons of the highest-level radionuclides dumped in the Arctic ocean, from Russia, the USA, France and England. Some of that high-level waste is constantly changing. Some has longer lasting, heat-generating radionuclides like pyrophoric plutonium

CESIUM 134-137 are migrating to the Pacific ocean from the Arctic ocean, so there is the Fukushima nuclear excrement in the Pacific and everything else.

The Russians brag about a floating reactor in the Arctic. That crappy old reactor will dump nuclear waste into the ocean and forever be prone to exploding there. The Russians have dumped old nuclear submarines and old reactors in the Arctic ocean. Americans and the UK and France have dumped subs into the oceans too.

Impending nuclear disaster, catastrophic climate change: Trump must be impeached

Impeach Trump Now, He is Careening America To Nuclear Catastrophe by Nuclear Deregulation and Ignoring Climate Change,  https://limitlesslife.wordpress.com/2019/07/19/impeach-trump-now-he-is-careening-america-to-nuclear-catastrophe-by-nuclear-deregulation-and-ignoring-climate-change/  [ reference sources supplied on original] By ed tanner    Trump and his crew are working hard to keep aged-dangerous reactors opened, in America. They are doing so, in spite of the flooding and hurricanes that destroyed a good part of Houston three years ago, and put half of New Orleans under water last week. There are many beat-up reactors in areas like this in the USA!Climate change is much more dangerous than we are led to think. The flooding in Iowa, Nebraska, Louisiana, Arkansas almost set off 4 of the oldest, most cracked and embrittled nuclear reactors in the world in the past weeks and last couple of months. It is due to unprecedented flooding in the mid-west and south.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake in southern California could have set off the Diablo Canyon reactors. The two large earthquakes there probably did some damage.

If a reactor blows up all bets are off, yet Trump and his crew are dead set on one or more nuclear cataclysms Occurring in the United States in the next 3 years! This alone is the most immediate need for Trump’s expedited, impeachment leading to his ouster in 2020.

1. Trump and his nuclear industry cronies use and push for more government money and rate increases, to keep the the worst of the 97 old reactors in America going when they should be closed.

Last week Senate Republicans voted at the urging of Trump, to subsidize two of the oldest and most dangerous reactors in the USA, staying opened at taxpayer and ratepayer expense.

2. Trump and nuclear-corporate cronies, have successfully allowed the extension of the operating licenses of reactors, that are long past due to be shut down.

3. The Trumpsters are methodically and busily deregulating supervision of nuclear reactors. Reactors that are cracked, have failing cooling systems, inadequate back-up systems. Highly embrittled reactors are allowed to stay opened, under Trump’s strident policies of nuclear-reactor, deregulation.

4. Trump’s NRC chairman killed regulations made after Fukushima to watchdog reactors in hurricane zones, flood zones and earthquake areas. Old beat-up reactors, like Diablo Canyon in California and Weatherford in Louisiana, are allowed to stay in operation, when hurricanes, earthquakes and floods hit instead of temporary shutdowns, till the danger passes.

These old reactors in hurricane zones and, earthquake zones are well past their due dates, to be shut down.

5. In the face of what has happened at Fukushima and Chernobyl, Trump and the republicans blocked the closing of two of the oldest and most dangerous reactors in the world in Ohio.

6. Trump and his minions have struck down rules and regulations that would have forced the closure of aged reactors, in dangerous earthquake, hurricane, and flood zones. Dangerous reactors like at Diablo Canyon or old Gulf Coast, Mid-western, and Atlantic reactors that continuously flood now. Most of the 97 old embrittled cracked reactors in america are well past their due dates.

America has the most reactors in the world. They are also some of the oldest and most decrepit, dangerous reactors in the world.

The nuclear cartel-Trump team is working hard to extend reactors staying open and having less supervision of them. There have been major reactor problems and nuclear catastrophes occurring, on average, about every seven years in the world, for 65 years.

The United Sates is the country closest to one or more nuclear catastrophes, in the next few years from major increases in floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes in areas with the the most dangerous reactors in the world, in the USA. The USA has 97 of them. Trump is lessening supervision of all of them.

Trump and cronies, are abrogating regulations for hardening reactors in flood zones and closing them in earthquake zones.

The USA has very significant levels of radionuclide contamination, everywhere. From Hanford to Rocky Flats, around all of the 97 old rickety reactors across the United States, in the thousands of nuclear-waste dumps, yada yada yada.

If a reactor and or fuel pool goes off in America it will release the equivalent, high-level radionuclide contamination of 10 thousand or more nuclear bombs.

The USA is already a heavily radionuclide-contaminated country, from sea-to-shining-sea. Kim Kardashian’s baby was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer linked to radionuclides, two years after the Santa Susana fires close to where Kim’s family lives.

American’s are stupid in allowing the insanity to continue, considering what happened at Chernobyl and what is going on at Fukushima.

The amount of illness and cancer in the next one or more nuclear-cataclysms in the USA in the next three years will be noticeable and catastrophic because the USA is already heavily contaminated from numerous nuclear-bomb detonations on its own citizens, hundreds of thousands of tons of nuclear waste, and numerous nuclear events that have happened in the past 78 years.

U.S. Slaps Sanctions On Nuclear Supply Network for Iran’s Enrichment Program

U.S. Slaps Sanctions On Nuclear Supply Network for Iran’s Enrichment Program,   Radio Farda, WASHINGTON 18 Jul 19, — The U.S. Treasury Department on July 18 imposed additional sanctions on Iran that target its nuclear-enrichment program. They are the first restrictive measures since Tehran said earlier this month that it would increase enriched uranium levels to above those allowed under the terms of a 2015 nuclear accord.

The blacklist includes five people and an international group of companies in Iran, Belgium, and China that acted as a supply network for Iran’s nuclear program.

The individuals and entities are subject to asset freezes within the United States and will be denied access to the U.S. financial system as well as listed as “weapons of mass destruction proliferators,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.,,,,,,,  https://en.radiofarda.com/a/u-s-slaps-sanctions-on-nuclear-supply-network-for-iran-s-enrichment-program/30064135.html
