Connecticut Fund for the Environment criticise inclusion of nuclear power in State’s energy portfolio

Connecticut commits to nuclear power, ending debate over Millstone’s future, By STEPHEN SINGER,  HARTFORD COURANT | DEC 28, 2018  “……….The state’s portfolio of energy used by utilities and sold to consumers and businesses will include power from Millstone and the Seabrook Station nuclear power plant in New Hampshire……….

Paul Koonce, chief executive officer of power generation at Dominion Energy Inc., the parent company of Millstone, said Millstone’s offer is “in the best interest of customers.”

But the Connecticut Fund for the Environment criticized the Malloy administration for shaping an energy portfolio “weighted very heavily” to the two nuclear plants.

“We’re glad the state will see some new solar and wind come online as a result of this procurement, but are still very concerned that as a whole, these … choices don’t put Connecticut on the road to a clean energy economy,” the group said.

Instead of investing more in offshore wind, solar, geothermal and strategies for efficiency and energy storage, “the state has doubled down on the energy sources of the past,” it said.

John Humphries, lead organizer for the CT Roundtable on Climate and Jobs, said Connecticut’s energy policy expands the offshore wind industry’s presence in the state.
