The company also said it has reached a preliminary  agreement with JEA to close down the St. Johns River Power Park, a coal-fired  power plant in Jacksonville that is jointly joined by the two companies. That plant, which is no longer economical to operate,  will not be replaced.

In addition to the approximately 600 megawatts of solar power Juno Beach-based FPL  is building at eight sites around the state,   the company said it wants to add  another 1,500 megawatts beginning in 2019 through 2023. It already operates  more than 335 megawatts of solar generating capacity.

Although the sites for the 1,500 megawatts of new solar have not been determined yet, FPL said that an undeveloped parcel it owns in western Miami-Dade County is a possible location for a solar facility.

The addition of nearly 2,100 megawatts of new solar will be enough to power more than 420,000 homes. Lower costs are possible because of existing transmission and substation infrastructure and the purchase of solar panels in large quantities…….
