Radionuclides have been known to be deadly since before the beginning of the nuclear age. Plutonium was predicted to be deadly before it was made, because it would be similar to Radium, but it turned out to be even worse. (On radium see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radium_Girls).
