Nuclear industry confident over long-term prospects, Ft.com 12 June 15“……….a petition against it has attracted almost 8,000 signatures.

The first nuclear power station in the UK, Calder Hall, was built nearby. But the legacy has also left the multibillion-pound problem of how to clean up Sellafield, one of the world’s biggest nuclear waste dumps.
The government wants to build a permanent underground storage facility but in 2013 Cumbria county council voted against hosting it. The process to find a site has restarted.
Mr Samson said a long-term storage solution would improve public perception of the nuclear industry. “We encourage the government and local community to find a solution.”
The waste for the 60-year life of the Moorside plant would fill two Olympic-sized swimming pools, he said. “The UK government is committed to nuclear power and it is important for them,” he said. “It is a clean and low-carbon source.”
