Using radiocarbon dating, new research in Geophysical Research Letters has calculated the age of relic moss samples that have been exposed by modern Arctic warming. Results show that temperatures in the Arctic are warmer than during any sustained period since the mosses were originally buried.

  1. North America has been under glaciation for more than the last million years and a warm “bump” 44,000 years ago exposed the ground before it was glaciated again. We know the ice has just retreated in the last 10,000 years and we are experiencing a similar warm bump today, which will be followed by another period of cold.
