The News That Matters about the Nuclear Industry Fukushima Chernobyl Mayak Three Mile Island Atomic Testing Radiation Isotope

Radiation is “good for you”claim by Australian uranium mining company

Stuff to do with Hormesis, Paul Langley’s Nuclear History Blog, 25 April 13“Addressing the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy in Adelaide, chair of the uranium company Toro Energy Erica Smyth said the true cost of coal was not yet being paid for by the community. She also said that there was a strong argument that some radiation “was good for you” …..” Adelaide Advertiser newspaper, August 13, 2011 page 7.

Smyth, representing her employer, a uranium miner, states that a “strong” “argument” claims that “some radiation” was “good for you”.

How much uranium is required to produce this “good radiation” ? And how is that “good radiation” to delivered to the people of this state? Via the milkman? The radiation emitted by uranium and its decay products have to be present within the human body to have any effect. How would a purchaser of the product know that the radiation emitted was “good”?

What are the “arguments” Smith refers to? She does not say.
How “strong” are these arguments? We don’t know, Smyth does not debate the issue, she merely states her position in relation to the “strong argument”. Smith is obviously all for the idea that “some” radiation is “good for you”. If one is not thinking, but listening as if the information were an advert for a desirable product, one might really want it……

The substances extracted by uranium mining consist of uranium and its decay products. So let’s have a look at these substances and the radiations they emit. Continue reading

Rejection of evacuation claim for Japanese children – is this justice?

questionJapan court rejects demand to evacuate children while acknowledging radiation risks on health  http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/04/24/japan-court-rejects-demand-to-evacuate-children-while-acknowledging-radiation/#ixzz2RWzeEca2 April 24, 2013 Associated Press

TOKYO –  A Japanese court has rejected a demand that a city affected by the fallout of the country’s 2011 nuclear disaster evacuate its children.

The unusual lawsuit was filed on behalf of the children by their parents and anti-nuclear activists in June 2011. The Sendai High Court handed down its ruling Wednesday.

The case had drawn international attention because it touched the uncertainties about the effects of continuous low-dose radiation on health, especially that of children.

The court acknowledged radiation exceeded levels deemed safe prior to the disaster. But it said the government shoulders no responsibility for evacuating the schools as demanded — in effect, telling people to leave on their own if they were worried.

Upgrading B61 tactical nuclear bombs – irrelevant goldplating?

If B61 nuclear bombs’ strategic purpose is unclear, why spend more on them? Heather Hurlburtguardian.co.uk,  24 April 2013  The controversy about upgrading US tactical weapons is a microcosm of unresolved issues over Pentagon budget cuts

The Obama administration’s 2014 defense budget, with its proposal to cut $460m from nuclear non-proliferation activities and use that money to pay for new features on its B61 tactical nuclear bombs, has sparked heated debate. Is the modernization desperately needed or irrelevant goldplating? Continue reading

New legislation could boost renewable energy investment in USA

The New Alphabet of Renewable Energy Investing: MLPs and REITs, Forbes, 24 April 13, Institutional investors manage more than $70 trillion in assets globally. But when it comes to renewable energy, a large portion of that capital is sitting on the sidelines.

It’s not that renewable energy is a bad investment—in fact, as I’ve explained before, clean energy projects provide exactly the kind of stable, consistent returns that long-term investors love. For example, when Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary MidAmerican Energy Holdings issued a $850 million bond offering for its Topaz Solar Farm last year, it was oversubscribed by nearly $400 million.

Investors want in on renewable energy investments; however, the types of investment vehicles available today are limited. Some of these limitations can be addressed by extending the same benefits that fossil fuel and real estate developers have enjoyed for years. New legislation and a call for clarity from the Internal Revenue Service could make two investment structures, Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts(REITs), the new alphabet of renewable energy investing. Radiation of Chernobyl blast discovered in Sri Lankan soil

“If an accident takes place in the Kundankulam Nuclear plant it will directly effect the public within a 50 Kilometre radius. The public will NOT be evacuated in such an instance.
The closest nuclear plant to Sri Lanka  is 220 Kilometres, the further the distance the less the impact but if an accident did take place, radioactive material can settle down in the soil in Sri Lanka but this would be in minimal quantities and the risk would be minimal
Friday, 19 April 2013 – 01:06 PM

A sample test carried out by the Sri Lankan Atomic Energy Authority has found some acute radioactive particles which were released by the Chernobyl nuclear explosion of Ukraine in Sri Lankan soil.

LONDON POLLUTION LEVELS BREACH EU LIMITS -And radioactive too!

MORE than six per cent of all adult deaths in Havering are attributable to air pollution, according to data by government body Public Health England.
Official figures reveal toxic gases in some areas of the borough almost 60 per cent higher than the legal limit.
Havering Council’s cabinet agreed on Wednesday to set about improving air quality amid fears over public safety and potential fines imposed by the EU.
A report presented to councillors on the night, jointly written by the council’s traffic manager, Emma Cockburn and health protection officer, Louise Watkinson, read: “London has some of the worst levels of air pollution of any UK or European city, and air quality is a very significant issue for Londoners’ health.
“A recent study commissioned by the Mayor estimated that more than 4,000 extra deaths each year in London are attributable to one kind of pollutant, microscopic airborne particles. Another study estimates that the man-made majority of these particles are responsible for a proportion of all deaths in London boroughs ranging from around six per cent in the least polluted outer suburbs to more than eight per cent in the most polluted boroughs of inner London.”
Councillors agreed to bid for up to £400,000 of funding for projects to improve air quality in Havering in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16, and uncapped funding for crossboundary projects in the same time period.
Latest air monitoring revealed that two of Havering’s four monitoring stations registered annual mean levels of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) above the legal limit in the most recently available figures, published in 2012.

According to EU law, any reading of more than 40 micrograms of NO2 per cubic metre of air is dangerous and becomes illegal. The highest readings were picked up by a monitoring station in Mercury Gardens, which produced an annual mean total of 64.5 micrograms – more than 60 per cent higher than what is legally considered to be dangerous. Throughout the year, readings at the station reached almost three times the legal limit.
NO2 is toxic by inhalation. Consistent exposure to levels above 40 micrograms can reduce lung function and cause respiratory illness.

Ukraine will cover the collapsed roof of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant with special resin to prevent the spread of radioactive dust, a senior nuclear safety official said here Tuesday.

“As soon as the weather permits, we will cover the equipment under the caved-in parts of the roof with special resin,” Mikhail Gashev, Ukraine’s chief inspector of nuclear and radiation safety, told reporters. […]

About 600 square meters of the roof at Chernobyl […] collapsed in mid-February. Authorities said at the time that the collapse posed no threat to human health.

[Contaminated water coming down to the sea?]Chloride concentration increased 270% of 2 weeks ago in observation holes

Posted by Mochizuki on April 23rd, 2013

About the major leakage of highly contaminated water, the chloride concentration is observed to be increasing in the observation holes.

[Leakage]Chloride concentration increased 270% of 2 weeks ago in observation holes

Tepco is conducting the radiation test of ground water in the downstream of the leaking reservoirs. (Between the reservoirs and the sea.)

The leaking water contains high level of β nuclide and chloride. If they detect it on the downstream of the reservoirs, it means the contaminated water is penetrating underground.

They tested on 4/10 and 4/22/2013. Though total β nuclide is lower than the detectable level, the chloride concentration significantly increased in 3 of 7 holes.

(4/10 → 4/22)
Well (hole) 1 : 40 → 46 ppm
Well 2 : 16 → 43 ppm
Well 3 : 65 → 99 ppm

On 4/15/2013, Fukushima Diary reported the chloride concentration was high in those observations holes, but now it’s becoming higher.

(cf, [Underground contamination?] High level of chloride concentration detected between the leaking reservoirs and sea [URL 1])

Actually these holes were made as “Underground bypass pumping well”. It was to pump up the groundwater before flowing into the plant. The pumped water is to be discharged to the sea without purification. Detecting radiation from these wells would collapse their water reducing plan.

(cf, The leaking highly contaminated water may collapse Tepco’s countermeasure for ground water [URL 2])

Title: Temporal variation of monthly 137Cs deposition observed in Japan: Effects of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident
Source: Applied Radiation and Isotopes
Author: Katsumi Hirose
Date: March 26, 2013

Abstract

Monthly 137Cs depositions from March 2011 to April 2012 were reported at monitoring stations within about 250 km from the Fukushima Daiichi NPP. The monthly 137Cs deposition at each station decreased with apparent half-lives of 11–14 d during the period from March to June 2011, and after July 2011 its decrease rates changed. Second peaks of the monthly 137Cs deposition occurred in February–April 2012, which may be supported by resuspension of 137Cs bearing particles. […]

Dividing communities as well as atoms

Dave Sweeney ABC Environment 23 Apr 2013

Uranium mining may be attractive to those seeking to boost state coffers, but it leaves the land poisoned and communities divided.

A tourist snorkels amid coral in the Great Barrier Reef

COMMUNITIES IN REGIONAL Queensland are increasingly concerned about Premier Campbell Newman’s decision to open the Sunshine State to uranium mining — and with good reason.

The decision was made behind closed doors in response to pressure from industry lobby groups and — by the Premier’s own admission — without reference to independent economic analysis or advice.

The decision also broke a promise. In a letter to the Australian Conservation Foundation dated 11 October 2012 Premier Newman stated: “I take this opportunity to reaffirm my statements, made before the last election, that the State Government has no plans to approve the development of uranium in Queensland”. Two weeks later the Premier put out the welcome mat for the uranium industry.

Queensland is no stranger to mining, but uranium is different.

Uranium is a dual use fuel — it can provide the raw material for nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons. Its mining and export divides communities as well as atoms.

It is a high risk, low return sector that makes only a modest contribution to employment (around 0.015 per cent of Australian jobs) and economic activity (under 0.3 per cent of national export revenue) but brings significant and unresolved environmental, health and safety risks, and leaves significant toxic legacies.

Of particular concern in Queensland is the possibility of uranium being transported across the Great Barrier Reef.

These processes create Radon that make Pblead etc..

Here is Jamnoises Video with her findings.. She will have a video out soon i hope to show miscarriage and still birth statistics using the FOI requests.. i lost three kids those ways, so i am interested to see the dates she comes up with.. Great sleuthing Jamnoise..!

More NHS Statistics. (Part2) Stats from Watford General Hospital Trust

Here are some of my preliminary findings correlating the data from Jamnoise72 on You Tube with some of mine.

The dates of large increases in respiratory problems where the patient was admitted straight to casualty or ICU, correlate with the dates of contamination noted by bloggers in Europe concerning nuclear releases from Hungary and Fukushima.

There is a hidden price to pay for medical isotope production.. and it is especially being paid by the people of Budapest and Fukushima, Miyagi prefectures in Japan as well as the west coast of the USA and the whole of Europe!

Europe too paid a price! The scientists NEVER discuss the PbLead issue!?? But bloggers do!

Nuclear Lead poisoning cover-up UK, serious wildlife contamination found!

In a recent wildlife report it was shown that birds tested in the period winter 2010 to winter 2011 were found that elevated levels of lead ………of waterbirds tested at four sites in Britain during the 2010/2011 winter this happening during some of the largest radioactive releases from nuclear power plants and medical reactors.

Dr Busby describes measurements made on an airconditing unit filter from inside an apartment in central Tokyo. This was sent by a lady in Tokyo who wanted to know if it was safe to live there. The filter only collected air from inside the apartment. It shows the presence of 130000Bq/kg radioCaesium in the dust plus enriched Uranium and for the first time Lead-210/Polonium-210. The apartment was evacuated from the Tuesday after the catastrophe and the machine switched off; and the family returned 5 months later. This and much other information about the health effects and cover ups, including leaked data are to be found in Dr Busby’s new book in Japanese: the Horror of Fukushima, published on 25th July by Kodansha in Tokyo

British ‘snoopers’ charter’ under revision amid harsh criticism

Published time: April 22, 2013 09:18
Edited time: April 22, 2013 15:38

The UK draft Communications Data bill that could allow the government to keep tabs on emails and Skype is being reviewed after a wave of criticism. The opposition has slammed the law as potentially disastrous and an affront to personal privacies.

The legislation is currently being revised by a commission of MPs after a torrent of criticism over the scope of the law. The prime minister received a letter from cyber security experts on Monday, calling the bill overly expensive with the potential to stifle innovation and undermine personal privacies, reported the Times.

“As a society, it would be stupid to build the infrastructure that could be used to oppress us,” Ben Hammersley, a Number 10 Downing Street tech advisor, told Tank Magazine. “The fact that we don’t know who is going to be in charge in 10 years’ time means that we shouldn’t give them free toys to play with.”

The draft bill has been championed by Home Secretary Theresa May, who described it as vital in combating pedophiles, fraudsters and extremists. However, civil liberties groups condemn the legislation as a step too far and have branded it as a “snoopers’ charter.”
