Closure confirmed of four more issues on reactor design

The design of the new EPR nuclear reactor currently elaborated by French power utility Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR) and nuclear engineering firm Areva SA (AREVA.FR) is on course to be approved by U.K. regulators by the end of the year.

MAIN FACTS:

– EDF said the update from regulators means that the UK EPR remains on schedule to be approved by the end of this year, in time for a decision from EDF Energy on whether to proceed with the project.

– The EPR reactor design is planned for new nuclear power stations at Hinkley Point and Sizewell.

– According to EDF, a report from the U.K. regulator recognizes “the improvements in the quality and timeliness of the submissions” made by EDF Energy and AREVA to address issues during the last six months, and concludes that “closure of all issues should be achievable before the end of the year”.

New reactors quarterly report publishedThe Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency have published their latest Generic Design Assessment (GDA) quarterly progress report. PDF

It contains detail about the closure of six further GDA issues on the EDF and AREVA UK EPR™ reactor design.  It also provides more detail on the wider design assessment process.

Since this report was written, ONR and the Environment Agency have closed a further nine issues, bringing the total GDA issues closed to 18 and leaving 13 remaining.

You can read about 13 of the closed issues here.   The additional five issues closed are: GI-UKEPR-RC-01; GI-UKEPR-SI-01; GI-UKEPR-CI-03; GI-UKEPR-CI-04 and GI-UKEPR-CI-05.  The closure letters for these issues will be available in due course.

Going forward, if the information provided by the requesting parties is right first time, the regulators might be able to close all of the remaining GDA issues before the end of the year.

However, we will not issue a Design Acceptance Confirmation or Statement of Design Acceptability until the requesting party has resolved all of the outstanding issues to our satisfaction and we have completed our necessary assessment.
