4 cattle have died since yesterday. One more calf is about to die. They must be fed enough though nutrition might not be perfect. Is bad disease going around ? I’m worried about radiation too. We call it Fukushima syndrome. […]

Diarrhea like water, snivel, spreading dermatitis, their immune system is being weaken, which is obvious even for amateur. It might be because of simply the lack of nutrition, epidemic disease, or radiation exposure. Probably it’s only in this hazard area, where series of cattle die one after one. We call it Fukushima syndrome, which was born from Tepco and the government.

A lot of calves are dying but adult cattle are dying too. Calves die regardless of the age. If it becomes winter in this situation, the number might become half or less than that.

Rising danger of a nuclear disaster in UK

UK nuclear plant disaster is ‘inevitable This is Somerset, 8 Oct 12 A specialist engineer who worked at Hinkley Point nuclear power station for almost 30 years has attacked the nuclear industry’s approach to safety and predicted that a Fukushima-type disaster in the UK was
“almost inevitable”.Peter Smith’s comments were made at and after a weekend rally in Bridgwater against the proposed new Hinkley C nuclear power station……

Mr Smith, who was head of the ‘electrical instrumentation section’ at Hinkley, said: “Over the years, I became more and more aware of the dangers and dark side of nuclear power. The industry denies that it ever puts profit before safety but this is a lie. I have seen
corner-cutting from the design stage onwards.

“The nuclear industry suffers from the delusion that nuclear power is safe. They said that after Three Mile Island, they said it after Chernobyl and they said it after Fukushima. Do we really want Hinkley Point to be the next major disaster?”

He said that the likelihood of a major accident in the UK is increasing…..

VIDEO: Nuclear waste disposal in Cumbria?

VIDEO Cumbria’s nuclear waste disposal dilemma is prolonged http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-19819973  BBC News 8 Oct 12 Britain needs to find a site for a long-term underground store for high level nuclear waste.

A site at Sellafield in Cumbria has been earmarked for the scheme which is potentially the size of a small city.

Experts say that waste stored at the site would be radioactive for thousands of years which has led to some environmental concerns.

As a result, a decision has been delayed until January 2013 when councillors will have to weigh up the economic benefits with environmental impact. Presenter Chris Jackson looks at this controversial project and visits a similar facility in Finland.

California Health Department not happy with Treasure Island’s radiation status

The Navy has yet to explain the significance of a 1965 report that described how “radioactive and poisonous wastes had been buried west of the abandoned landing strip in a future construction area.”

Navy’s Treasure Island Radiation Report Found Wanting NBC Bay Area 8 Oct 12 The Navy’s report is part of the process of turning the military land over to the city of San Francisco, which has approved construction of 8,000 homes there. By Matt Smith |  Monday, Oct 8, 2012 Recent U.S. Navy explanations for widespread readings of radioactivity on the former Treasure Island Naval Station don’t adequately explore the possibility that the base might have been dusted for years with radioactive ash, soaked with radioactive sewage and contaminated by radioactive garbage, California health regulators said today. Seabrook nuclear relicensing could be stalled by Federal legislation

“Allowing the NRC to give a 60-year-long clean bill of health to reactors that are in their nuclear adolescence, especially one with documented safety issues such as Seabrook, is like allowing a doctor to assure a 20-year-old smoker they will never get lung cancer,”

Bill could delay Seabrook nuclear plant relicensing Seacoastonline By Shir Haberman October 08, 2012   SEABROOK — The approval of a 20-year extension of the Seabrook Station nuclear power plant’s operating license could be delayed until 2020 if a bill proposed by two Democratic federal legislators from Massachusetts is approved by Congress.

HR 6554 filed by Reps. Edward Markey and John Tierney would prohibit the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission from granting a license extension to any current nuclear plant licensee that applies for it more than 10 years prior to the expiration of its current license.
Seabrook Station has already petitioned the NRC for a 20-year extension of its operating license, which will not expire until 2030. Continue reading

Strong police presence and arrests at Hinkley anti nuclear action

Hinkley Point: Arrests over trespass BBC News 8 Oct 12 Seven people have been arrested as anti-nuclear protesters carried out a planned trespass at Hinkley Point. More than 50 police officers attended the site as a weekend of action against government plans to build a third nuclear reactor drew to a close.

…Camilla Berens, from the Stop New Nuclear Alliance, said: “We have successfully blockaded the main entrance to Hinkley Point on two occasions in the last year and now we have accomplished a mass trespass.

“Our message today is that we will continue to raise the game with peaceful protest until our voice is heard.” On Saturday, barrels made to look like nuclear waste were rolled
through Bridgwater as part of a procession…

..Hinkley Point C is one of eight potential sites in England and Wales identified by the
government for new nuclear power stations by 2025. The site’s current Hinkley Point B came into service in 1976 but its working life has been extended to 2016.

Europe’s problems with differences in nuclear regulators

Nuclear Power Puts European Integration to the Test — Again Bloomberg By David Henry Oct 8, 2012 If European Union authorities in Brussels didn’t have enough to do trying to prop up a monetary system built on sand, now they are faced with another challenge to the integration process that may again reveal their weakness on issues that matter: nuclear power.

Last week, results of stress tests on the safety of 145 nuclear reactors in the EU found that as much as 25 billion euros ($32.4 billion) needs to be spent to retrofit and upgrade existing power plants to conform to international standards. But the security shortcomings identified by the report  — which assessed scenarios such as earthquakes, flooding, terrorism and plane crashes around nuclear sites — were mostly already known to national regulators.  More than anything, the report and its recommendations highlight the EU’s lack of authority over member states .

Fourteen of the EU’s 27 countries have nuclear reactors and all member states have their own regulators, which are responsible for implementing their own plans for nuclear safety. Continue reading

Report: Vermont Yankee thermal discharge exceeds permit limits

“They seem to think that fish should be able to do math. Guess what, fish can’t do math but they do know when they are in hot water.”

GREENFIELD – Scientists for the state of Massachusetts say the discharge from a nuclear plant in Vernon, Vt., is adding heat to fish habitats in theConnecticut River far beyond what the reactor’s water permit allows.

Ken Sprankle, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service coordinator for the Connecticut River, said he’s working with the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, the state Department of Environmental Protection and similar departments in New Hampshire and Vermont to create a recommendation on the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant’s usage of the river.
