Radiation danger in dental X rays – shown to raise risk of meningiomas

Dental X-Rays Linked To Meningiomas   http://www.southasiamail.com/news.php?id=106219    13 Aug 12, – W. Gifford-Jones M.D.  What should you do the next time the dentist tells you he or she is going to take full dental X-rays? A new study shows that just as porcupines make love very, very carefully you should also take care to limit the amount of radiation exposure during your lifetime, particularly the amount your children receive.

Dr. Elizabeth Claus of Yale University reports in the American Cancer Society Journal “Cancer”, that there’s a link between dental x-rays and the risk of developing a brain tumour called a meningioma.  Continue reading

Veil of secrecy for families of atomic test veterans

TO THE WIDOWS AND CHILDREN  http://www.atomicvetkin.com/widowschildren.html  You too are the victims of an unconscionable, haphazardly executed military plan to deify the atomic bomb.

Because of “secrecy” surrounding the nuclear test program and the veteran’s “oath of secrecy” very little is known by their families about the veterans involvement and experiences. Widows are often unaware of the veteran’s test participation and that the illness that led to their death was the result of ionizing radiation exposure. You may not be aware that your husband or father died in the service of our country and has made the ultimate sacrifice.
This dedication is to the young women, who along with the Atomic Veterans, were denied the right to know of the possible deleterious effects of radiation exposure on their lives and that of their children. They were denied the right to know that their futures held increased possibilities of any or all of the following effects:  Continue reading

Fukushima radiation harmed second generation of butterflies more than first

Fukushima radiation spawned mutant butterflies  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-08-13/fukushima-mutant-butterflies/4194240  By North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy
August 13, 2012 Researchers in Japan say radioactive fallout from the Fukushima meltdowns has created abnormalities among the nation’s butterfly species. The researchers collected hundreds of butterflies in the weeks and months after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. They found abnormalities – including unusually small wings – in more than 10 per cent of the butterflies they surveyed.

The rate of abnormalities then rose to more than 33 per cent with the second generation, with some butterflies dying before reaching adulthood. In an article published in the British journal Nature , the scientists conclude that nuclear fallout caused the mutations. They have called for further research to be conducted on other animal species.

Protest organised against uranium mining in Selous Game Reserve

UNESCO sacrifices wildlife preserve for uranium mine New World Heritage sites are always announced with an especially effective publicity. However, the decision for the boundary change in the Selous Game Reserve was not communicated to the public. Now that the UNESCO has accepted the boundary change, they have made way for a major uranium mine called  Mkuju River Uranium Project . It will be owned by  Russian ARMZ, a  subsidiary of ROSATOM, together with the Canadian company Uranium One.

“Uranium mining is incompatible with World Heritage”

In 2011, the UNESCO announced that „mining activities and dam projects would be incompatible with the status of World Heritage sites“. At the same time, the government of Tanzania announced that they had agreed to a declaration of intent for the construction of a dam in the Rufiji river with a Brasilian Company. The river runs through the centre of the Selous Reserve and is supposed to secure the electricity for the planned uranium mining project.

The „Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage“ of UNESCO has been ratified by 189 states. The UN runs a list of 962 World Heritage sites, this includes 188 World Natural Heritages, as well as the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania.

In the areas where uranium mines are active, there have been severe damages to the environment and the health of the local communities. With their decision, the UNESCO is co-responsible for the future destruction of the environment and human life in the Selous Game Reserve.

Environmental groups accuse the UNESCO of failure and irresponsibility. Their decision appears to be influenced by corporate and lobby interests. Now there is a risk that this case has set a precedent that endangers the protection of other World Heritage sites for similiar interests.

We must not let a World Heritage site be sacrificed. Please support this letter of protest to the UNESCO. https://www.rainforest-rescue.org/mailalert/883/unesco-sacrifices-wildlife-preserve-for-uranium-mine#.UCZ9m-i6aQF.facebook

Tanzania uranium project held up till Australian company Mantra pays taxes

Tanzania: Uranium Project Licence Shelved Till Tax Bill Paid, Beyond Nuclear 12 Aug 12,  Dodoma – A SPECIAL mining licence to allow Russian firm, Uranium One start mining at Mkuju River in the Selous Game Reserve buffer zone, will not be issued until Australian Mantra Resources pay over 180 million US dollars (approx. 292.12bn/-) in taxes, the Parliament was told.

Mantra Resources sold majority of its shares to Atomredmetzoloto (ARMZ) of Russia for 980 million US dollars (approx. 1.54trn/-) last year, according to Kigoma North lawmaker, Zitto Kabwe.
Minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, made the remarks while responding to a main question from Mkoani MP, Ali Khamis Seif (CUF), who wanted to know the government’s benefit from the Mkuju uranium mining project.
Prof Muhongo said his ministry’s experts were meeting with Uranium One representatives and State Mining Corporation (Stamico) to discuss a number of issues, including the project’s shares, that would also involve the local communities in the mining area.
“I can assure you that the licence has not been issued and we are very careful with the current negotiations,” said Prof Muhongo. The minister pointed out that his team was shifting from the ‘business as usual’ practice to ensure that the nation and communities benefit from mining.
“We want to make sure the government gets its fair share of revenue including dividend. Local communities should not be forced to rely on generosity of mining companies. They have to benefit directly,” he said.
Earlier, Mr Kabwe sought the Speaker’s guidance to alert the minister that the Tanzania Revenue Authority was still pressing Mantra Resources to pay 20 per cent taxes after selling its majority stake to ARMZ last year.
“Let us avoid the mistakes we made that resulted in huge losses in the gold mining projects,” the fiery lawmaker who is also Deputy Leader of the official opposition in parliament said. Prof Muhongo said his ministry was in contact with its Malawian and Namibian counterparts who have ongoing uranium mining projects.
“Malawi has the only known uranium mining project in the region and as such, we are learning from their experience,” the minister noted.

“…While the government of Japan has declared the cold shutdown and is anxious to talk up progress at the site, Mr Yoshida spoke in his interview as if he didn’t consider the reactors stabilised.

He said he had remained silent until now because he felt it was not right to speak while the four investigations into the tragedy – now concluded – were still under way…”.

Mr Yoshida said he and the other workers told everything to investigators and the findings reflected this, but their human stories didn’t come through in the investigatory reports.
