“.. [State health] officials have raised questions about exposure for residents of the island. At an August 2011 meeting, a summary shows, the health department alleged that a Navy contractor might have inadvertently exposed children to radioactive dust at a Boys & Girls Club and a child development center on the island.

The Navy and state Department of Toxic Substances Control, a separate agency also monitoring Navy cleanup activities, said the Boys & Girls Club and child center never were contaminated with radioactive dust. They also say that, in general, radiation levels found on the island are too low to endanger human health – only slightly higher than natural radiation found in ordinary backyards….”

  1. This is irresponsible reporting. The 2004 report that describes the sources of radiation is at http://sftreasureisland.org/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=67

  2. This is the original report from the San Francisco Chronicle. It does not even have any added TV reporting coverage. KGO-TV’s coverage adds interview with Supervisor Tony Hall about the real risk of major development of Treasure Island. The island is completely built on fill. One of the reasons that the Navy decided to close its training base is because the 1989 earthquake exposed foundations from the 1939 Worlds Fair. The island is also extremely susceptible to flooding if sea level rises or if a Bay Area quake (the 1989 quake was closer to Santa Cruz than San Francisco) causes a sloshing of the Bay called a seiche, In the early 1980’s the Navy had to have contractor dump tons of rock to keep Treasure Island connected to Yerba Buena Island.
