10 incidents at nuclear power plants within 10 days

Nuclear power: Ten incidents worldwide in ten days http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/331111 By Tim Sandle Aug 19, 2012 – Over a ten days period, between August 8 and August 18, ten nuclear incidents were recorded worldwide. These included events in the USA, UK and Japan. the world’s news has seen ten nuclear power related incidents occur over a ten day period during August 2012.
The first incident occurred on August 8 and continued until August 18. The events were compiled by the website The Watchers .

The ten events were, by country:

Belgium. August 8 Doel 3 nuclear reactor at Doel Nuclear Power Station in Belgium was shut down on August 8, 2012 under the suspicion that one of its components might be cracked. For more details, see The Watchers .

Belgium. August 16. Tihange 2 nuclear reactor. The reactor was halted as it has the same pressure vessel as Doel 3 at Doel Nuclear Power Station. This followed an inquiry into the Doel system.

USA. August 12. Operators of the Calvert Cliffs (Maryland) nuclear power plant in Southern Maryland shut down one of the two reactors because a control rod unexpectedly dropped into the reactor core, causing a reduction in power generation. For more details see Pen Energy .

USA. August 12. Connecticut’s Millstone Power Station shut one of two units on Sunday because seawater used to cool down the plant is too warm. For more details, see Business Week .

USA. August 12. Palisades (Michigan) is shut down because of a leak of coolant from the control rods. For more details see the Detroit Free Press .

USA. August 14. One of the two nuclear generators at the Prairie Island plant (Minnesota) was shut down because its emergency diesel generators suffered exhaust leaks. For more details see the Star Tribune .

USA. August 14. The Monticello (Minnesota) nuclear plant’s single generating unit, which had been operating at 10 percent capacity since last weekend, was shut down because of a leaking pipe inside the plant’s concrete containment structure.

USA. August 16. Michigan, Fermi. The plant computer system failed, causing a temporary shutdown. For more details see the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission .

Japan. August 16. Tokyo Electric Power Co. discovered possibly highly radioactive water on the first floor of the No. 4 reactor turbine building at its disaster-crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant on Tuesday morning. For more details see the Daily Yomiuri .

UK. August 18. Fire crews were called to Torness nuclear power station in East Lothian after a blaze broke out. The plant’s on-site fire team dealt with the incident, which involved lagging on a pipe catching fire at 12:25am.
