Promote clean energy, don’t subsidise nuclear – says Scotland
” the UK Government must recognise that the purpose of this reform is to support renewable energy, not to provide subsidies for nuclear energy.”
Government: Renewables not nuclear Google News(UKPA) – 23 May 12, Planned reforms to the electricity market must focus on renewable energy rather than nuclear subsidies, according to the Scottish Government.
The comment follows publication of the draft UK Energy Bill which the British Government hopes will deliver the £110 billion investment needed to build new low-carbon capacity.
Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: “Scotland already leads the world in renewable energy which is bringing in jobs and investment to communities across Scotland.
“We should focus on that potential, and the UK Government must recognise that the purpose of this reform is to support renewable energy, not to provide subsidies for nuclear energy. Clean, green renewables must not lose out from increased support for nuclear.”…..
The Scottish Government is opposed to new nuclear power and can
effectively block any UK plan for new plants north of the border.
Mr Ewing said Scotland must be a partner in decision making, not a consultee.
“The Scottish Government supports the aims of strengthening market
support for renewable electricity, and is working with UK Government
in these reforms so they reflect Scotland’s powers and help realise
our energy potential,” he said….
