Radiation safety fears in Sri Lanka, due to proximity to India’s nuclear projects

Sri Lanka sets up radiation warning system,  Apr 14, 2012, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. Apr 14, Colombo: Sri Lanka has taken measures to establish a warning system to alert to the danger of radiation in an event of a leak from the nuclear plants in neighboring India.

The Chairman of Sri Lanka’s Atomic Energy Authority Dr. Ranjith
Wijewardena has said that Sri Lanka will seek the assistance of the
International Atomic Energy Agency to establish the warning system.

He has said that a warning system would help to minimize the hazard of
a radiation leak on the country in the event of an accident that could
occur in any of the nuclear power plants located in the state of Tamil
Nadu in India.

The recent developments in the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil
Nadu’s Tirunelveli district is making Sri Lanka nervous as the power
plant is only 250 kilo meters from Sri Lanka’s northwestern coastal
town of Mannar.

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka
recently expressed concerns on the possible radiation effects the
power plant could have on Sri Lanka.

He pointed out that in the event of a nuclear disaster in a South
Indian plant, Sri Lanka would be in the direct path of the impact
range and the disaster would wreak havoc in the tiny island and Sri
Lanka’s Atomic Energy Authority does not possess adequate facilities
to face a threat of nuclear accident.

Sri Lanka plans to discuss the issue of safety of India’s nuclear
power plants at the September session of the International Atomic
Energy Agency and seek the Agency’s help to meet any nuclear
disaster…. http://www.colombopage.com/archive_12/Apr14_1334387677CH.php
