9 Organisations planning court action against Vogtle nuclear plant license

Anti-nuke groups plan court action to block Georgia plant, Charlotte Business Journal by John Downey,   February 8, 2012,  The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission    is expected to vote Thursday on whether to license the Southern Co. ’s proposed 2,234-megawatts Vogtle nuclear plant.

But anti-nuclear activists are asking the commission to delay the vote as they prepare to file a federal suitnext week against the proposed licensing.
The groups contend the NRC will violate federal law if it issues the
license because, they contend, it has not considered the lessons from
the crippling damage done to the four reactors in Fukushima, Japan,
following an earthquake and tsunami last year. The groups will file
the suit “in a matter of days,” according to a press release. They
will ask the court to order the NRC to prepare a new environmental
impact statement on the project in the wake of the Fukushima
disaster….
The nine groups challenging the NRC are the Friends of the Earth, the
Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Blue Ridge Environmental Defense
League, Center for a Sustainable Coast, Citizens Allied for Safe
Energy, Georgia Women’s Action for New Directions, North Carolina
Waste Awareness and Reduction Network, Nuclear Information and
Resource Service and Nuclear Watch South.
The Southern Alliance, meanwhile, has also sued the U.S. Department of
Energy    , saying it has improperly refused to disclose what should
be public information about the $8.3 billion loan guarantee the
department gave for the Vogtle project.
