Obama gets no support from China and Russia on tougher measures to Iran
Russia and China stay silent after Obama seeks their support over Iran nuclear bomb threat Absolutely no consensus’ between three leaders By DAILY MAIL REPORTER 14th November 2011 Barack Obama was met with a wall of silence from his counterparts in China and Russia when he brought up the increasing problem of Iran’s nuclear programme at a global summit.
The President had sought support from Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev and China’s Hu Jintao at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Hawaii at the weekend.
However neither leader publicly voiced support for Obama’s statements in Honolulu…..
Iran has insisted its nuclear work is in the peaceful pursuit of energy and research, not weaponry.
U.S. officials have said the report by the International Atomic Energy Agency was unlikely to persuade China and Russia to support tougher sanctions on the Iranian government.
But led by Obama, the administration is still trying to mount pressure on Iran, both through the United Nations and its own….
More broadly, Obama sought to position the United States as a Pacific power and that more American jobs could be created by tapping into the region’s potential.
For businesses, he said, ‘this is where the action’s going to be’.
The United States is a Pacific power and we’re here to stay,’ Obama said.
The eight countries joining the U.S. in the zone would be Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam…..
Obama will be in Honolulu until Tuesday, when he leaves for Australia before ending his trip in Indonesia…. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2061166/Iran-nuclear-bomb-threat-Obama-seeks-backup-Russia-China.html#ixzz1djFxwmpG
