India’s Kudankulam nuclear project halted

Work halts at Kudankulam, The Hindu, T. S. SUBRAMANIAN 4 Nov 11,Personnel unable to enter plant: AEC chairman Work at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) in Tamil Nadu has “halted” because the plant personnel are “unable to go inside” and this situation has arisen “when we need several thousands of people to work inside during the last phase of work” of commissioning of the first reactor there, said Srikumar Banerjee, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission.

“We are unable to even enter the place. This is the situation today,” he said in a recent interview with The Hindu in his Mumbai office.

The KKNPP comprises two Russian VVER-1000 reactors, each with a capacity of 1,000 MWe. The first reactor was on course for commissioning in November/December and the second was to be started up in June 2012.

(Several hundreds of people led by the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) and belonging to the coastal villages around the KKNPP are on a relay fast at Idinthakarai village from September 11, demanding the project’s closure. The KKNPP engineers and other staff are unable to enter the plant from October 13 because of the restrictions placed on them and threats from the villagers. About 3,000 contract-labourers from Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and Orissa have left for their home-States after they received threats).

‘NOT ADVISABLE’

….the core demand of the PMANE leaders that work at the KKNPP should halt first before the 15-member experts’ group announced by the Centre could talk to the villagers and allay their fears about the safety of the Kudankulam reactors,

  1. Myself VIGNESH working in L&T. I worked in Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant site 3 Months before. I surely know there is no way to get a accident. If accident Occurs the entire plant will shut down within 3 second without any electrical supply. This is one big thing, NO one plant has this facility in the world. One more thing the PHRS system were invented and implemented in this site, The Russians were impressed they planned to get that design from the India. ONE QUOTE GIVEN BY NPCIL, BEFORE 30 YEARS PEOPLE WERE AFRAID TO USE THE GAS CYLINDER FOR PURPOSE OF COOKING. NOW ALL HOME HAVE THE GAS STOVE. Because we have the capacity to handle it, if the gas leakage occurs we know what to do. Now Indian Nuclear People have the capcity to handle the Nuclear in the safest way. They do all the safety measures before, in fact during construction the Tsunami is coming, But the plant have no damage. The Npcil try to educated the people about the Nuclear. Even our PM do know about the Nuclear, he discussed with the NPCIL only. I assured 100precently this is the safety Nuclear Plant in the world. We have to believe our India is the safest country, In that TamilNadu is the safest place.

Sounds like it’s experimental. So Kudankulam is a guinea pig for a new nuclear system.
