Medical radiation treatment necessary, but carries risks

Radiation treatment meant mother could not touch son Hartlepool Mail, 30 September 2011   A MUM was forced to stay away from her baby son after being given potentially dangerous treatment when she found she had a rare form of cancer.  New mum Jill Teasdale could not get close to little son Max just months after he was born after contracting thyroid cancer.

The 30-year-old found a lump in her neck and following hospital tests, was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. Within weeks, she had undergone an operation to remove her thyroid gland and was prescribed a course of radioactive iodine treatment.

“The treatment lasted about a week, but because of the radiation I wasn’t allowed to get close to my little boy,” she said. “I had to have minimum contact.”

Although diagnosed in June 2009, it was not until the following April that Jill was given the all clear…..

Risk of cancer – delayed, but real, in medical radiation

Medical imaging with radiation and cancer: the risk  Indy Star.com 3 Oct 11 Ionizing radiation used in medical imaging, such as CT scans and diagnostic X-rays, is high-frequency radiation that has enough energy to remove an electron from an atom or molecule. This is called ionization. Ionized molecules are unstable and quickly undergo chemical changes. Ionizing radiation has enough energy to damage the DNA in cells, which in turn may lead to cancer, says the American Cancer Society.

» The damage takes place in a fraction of a second, but other changes, such as the beginning of cancer, may take years to develop. Radiation studies have shown it takes five to 10 years for blood cancers to develop and 15 to 30 years for solid tumors to develop.

Most studies on radiation and cancer risk have looked at people exposed to very high does of radiation, such as during the Chernobyl nuclear accident….  http://www.indystar.com/article/20111002/LIVING01/110020319/Medical-imaging-radiation-cancer-risk

Top ten places in dangerous radioactivity

Just wait till the communist parties in China and North Korea finally fall, and the truth is out. You haven’t heard/seen real horror stories yet! Already, China’s known pollution is horrifying,

Fukushima Tops List of World’s 10 Most Radioactive Places Fellowship of the Minds – Conservatives who love America 24 Sept 11  Our media have the attention span of a child.

The damaged nuclear reactors of Fukushima Daiichi, Japan, have fallen off the radar of our media’s interest, but that doesn’t mean things are hunky dory.

On the contrary, according to the 2010 report by the non-profit Blacksmith Institute, the most radioactive places are listed, with Chernobyl the worst.  But now, Fukushima can top the list of the world’s ten most radioactive places. Yes, Fukushima is more radioactive than Chernobyl!

Plutonium in soil 40 Km from Fukushima nuclear plant

Plutonium 40km from Fukushima plantFT.com Asia Pacific By Mure Dickie in Tokyo, 3 Oct 11  Small amounts of plutonium believed to have escaped from Japan’s tsunami-crippled    nuclear plant have been detected in soil more than 40km away, say government researchers, a finding that will fuel already widespread fears about radiation risk……

The plutonium was found at six sites – including one in Iitate around 40km from the plant – all of which are subject to evacuation orders. However, plutonium’s long half-life and the potential for even small amounts to pose a health hazard if ingested is likely to make it a focus of popular concern.

Japanese authorities, who significantly underestimated radiation releases from the plant in the early days of the crisis, have since struggled to convince the public that they are able effectively to guard against radiation health threats…. http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/7e3af460-ece6-11e0-be97-00144feab49a.html#axzz1Zkkm68Sy

Rich countries delay action climate change, Pacific Islanders the losers

The proposal will prove divisive for poorer countries.

None more so than nations most vulnerable to climate change, such as low-lying islands that face ever rising sea levels, flooding and shrinking fresh water supplies. They want faster action by big polluters and feel Kyoto is the way to go.

World divided on new plan to combat global warming, Reuters  David Fogarty, SINGAPORE,  October 2, 2011  A new plan to curb global warming risks becoming a battleground between rich and poor nations and could struggle to get off the ground as negotiators battle over the fate of the ailing Kyoto climate pact.

The 1997 Kyoto Protocol covers only emissions from rich nations that produce less than a third of mankind’s carbon pollution and its first phase is due to expire end-2012. Poorer nations want it extended, while many rich countries say a broader pact is needed to include all big polluters. Continue reading

Kudankulam protest will re-ignite if nuclear building continues

Anti-nuke activists threaten to revive stir, Times of India TNN | Oct 3, 2011, TIRUNELVELI: Ten days after the agitation against the construction of a nuclear plant at coastal Kudankulam in southern Tamil Nadu was withdrawn, the anti-nuclear plant activists have threatened to revive the protest if the ongoing work in the multi-crore Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), was not suspended.

The activists, who spearheaded the 12-day protest by the villagers, have threatened that they would embark on a mass fast from October 9, if theCentral government failed to suspend the ongoing commissioning work in the nuclear plant by October 7.

Representatives of non-governmental organisations, social activists, anti-nuclear plant groups and community leaders took the decision at the consultative meeting held in Kudankulam to discuss about the future course of action on the project on Sunday. A group of activists from Kerala also visited Kudankulam to express their solidarity with the anti-nuke protestors here.  “This time around we are planning to take the protest across the state rather than restricting it to Kudankulam or Idinthakarai,” said S Sivasubramanian, an anti-nuclear plant activist….. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/madurai/Anti-nuke-activists-threaten-to-revive-stir/articleshow/10213344.cms

Criminals in possession of Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU)

US:Officials say crime ring has uranium,  AAP International News  27 Sep 2011,  WASHINGTON,  – Investigators following up on a nuclear sting in Eastern Europe suspect that a crime syndicate was trying to sell weapons-grade uranium to buyers in North Africa.

Officials in Moldova, a former Soviet republic, told The Associated Press that at least one kilogram of highly enriched uranium, or HEU, remains in criminal hands and probably is in another country.
The investigation has provided fresh evidence of a black market in nuclear material that probably was taken from poorly secured stockpiles in the former Soviet Union.
US authorities have been aiding the Moldovans in the search for a Russian, believed to be the ringleader of the smuggling operation. They also are searching for a North African buyer who fled Moldova. —http://aap.newscentre.com.au/acf/110927/library/nuclear_issues/26771097.html

UK cuts back on armed forces, spends up big on nuclear weapons

The huge sum, signed off with little parliamentary scrutiny, has raised questions over the accountability of AWE to the taxpayer and the MoD’s priorities

while all armed forces are suffering cuts, the UK’s nuclear weapons programme is benefiting from significant increases in spending, even before the government makes a decision on replacing Trident, the ballistic nuclear missile system.

Britain’s nuclear spending soars amid defence cuts Secret MoD report reveals £750m bill for enriched uranium plant as Liam Fox announces axing of 1,100 navy personnel. The Guardian, ,  2 October 2011, Government spending on Britain’s nuclear weapons programme is defying the swingeing budget cuts being experienced across Whitehall.

As the Ministry of Defence cuts frontline positions in the military, a previously confidential report reveals that the taxpayer is committed to paying almost £750m for the construction of a new enriched-uranium facility at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Berkshire. The 32-page MoD report, Defence Equipment & Support … UK Enriched Uranium (EU) Capability Investment Appraisal, spells out the taxpayer’s commitment to funding Project Pegasus, which will replace the enriched-uranium facility built at the site in the 1950s. Anti nuclear protest rally in Toledo, Ohio

Anti-nuclear activists rally in Promenade Park, By Dick Berry,TOLEDO, OH (WTOL), 1 Oct 11 – Anti-nuclear activists rallied Saturday in Downtown Toledo’s Promenade Park. They called for the closure of nuclear power plants like Davis Besse and production of more green energy.

The keynote speaker was Democratic Cleveland Congressman Dennis Kusinich. He says Americans need to ditch nuclear power and develop less expensive forms of energy, such as wind and solar technology.

“We could create millions of jobs doing that. We have to look at how we can get our energy going again, protect the jobs we have now and get our economy going again using new energy development.”….

“The technology is there with wind and solar. It’s just a matter of us having the political will to do it” says Michael Leonardi of the Toledo Coalition for Safe Energy….  http://www.wtol.com/story/15596725/anti-nuclear-activists-rally-in-promenade-park
