Kudankulam nuclear power project in earthquake prone area

‘Project unwise as area quake-prone’, Times of India, TNN | Sep 26, 2011, MADURAI: Activists opposing the Kudankulam nuclear power plant have alleged that the implementing authority has violated certain essential rules in the establishment of the project. Anti-nuclear committee member Dr R Ramesh has claimed that Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project officials got a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for setting up two reactors for generating 440 mega watts of power but had instead built two 1,000 mega watt units. He urged the state government either to suspend or cancel the NOC granted to the plant.
He said geology professors from Kerala University, Biju Longinus and Ram Sharma, had already conducted a comprehensive seismological survey in southern India and after the detailed study, they found that the tectonic plates under the soil was weak in southern districts of Tamil Nadu. This could lead to an earthquake, he cautioned.
Dr Ramesh said the government should form a geological survey committee, including anti-nuclear committee members as well as the geology professors who conducted the survey, to assess feasibility of such projects. He pointed out that the earlier seismological survey report stated that an earthquake could occur in the southern districts of the state…..
We do welcome development projects, but the nuclear plant site is earthquake-prone,” he said…..
