Following France’s accident, Koodankulam anti nuclear protest gathers momentum

this was not a struggle by a selective group of people. “Authorities are giving a colour that it is a struggle by fishermen against a nuclear project. But the fact is that all sections of people are participating in it,”

France nuke blast fuels Koodankulam agitation, New Indian Express, 14 Sept 11, TIRUNELVELI: As news about the explosion at a nuclear site in Marcoule, southern France reached the fasting agitators in Idinthakarai, the call to shut down the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) almost reached a feverish pitch.

The activists were quick to point out that this was just another example of the danger that nuclear reactors could pose to the community. Today’s agitation saw as many as 127 people, including 25 women, continuing their indefinite hunger strike at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district.
Apart from these 127, another 11,000 joined the relay hunger strike at the venue on Monday and a large number of people from neighbouring Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts also arrived and participated in stir.
The agitators charged that the State government was indifferent to their hunger strike even though it was intensifying with every passing day. “Our protests indicate that the nuclear project is being implemented against the wishes of thousands of people,” said Sahayaraj of Idinthakarai, who is on an indefinite hunger strike.

He further added that the government tries to ignore the protests and no one from the government has spoken a word about KKNPP. “The step-motherly attitude of the government towards this agitation make us feel that we are not even considered as Indian citizens,” he said in an aggrieved note.
S P Udayakumar, an anti-nuclear activist said that this was not a struggle by a selective group of people. “Authorities are giving a colour that it is a struggle by fishermen against a nuclear project. But the fact is that all sections of people are participating in it,” he said…
On Monday, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko visited the protest venue and expressed solidarity with the people…..

  2. Our minds and our consciousness is what runs the world. The Nuclear Industry has brain-washed us to think that Nuclear Power Electricity is the only way to cope with future electricity needs. At present in most countries it barely supplies 3 to 4% of their needs and 90% of all their headaches. Japan has closed 48 of their 58 nuclear power plants and they are managing without nuclear quite well presently. Also all the uranium in the world is running out! Costs of uranium mining are escalating and new nuclear plant workers will be hard to find because of the way workers are being literally sacrificed at the altar of their company TEPCO! So why start a nuclear plant when there is no uranium and no workers?!! Once a plant is commissioned it is radio-active and to decomission it will costs 6 BILLION DOLLARS which you and I will have to pay, not our glib politicians. In the event of an accident the insurance will cap it maximum liability at 70 million dollars. Japan has a bill of cleaning up costs that is now over 260 BILLION DOLLARS .Will the japanese Government pay that money…No Way…this once prosperous country is now poorer than Greece – thanks to Nuclear Power! So now the Japanese people have lost their safe air, safe water and safe food and will also lose their money for a fault that was not their own. They did protest like the people in Koodankalam but TEPCO like our dear Ms Jayalalitha promised them that Fukushima was absolutely SAFE. So they let down their guard and now they’ve lost EVERYTHING , even their will to live in some instances. My heartfelt thanks to the people in Koodankalam and my prayers will be with. We who live up in northern Tamil Nadu know how you are sacrificing your time in actively protesting against this foolishness of our government.
Let’s keep our minds and consciousness focussed on the thought that Nuclear Power is Obsolete, Has NO FUTURE in our country and will soon be as dead as a dodo
