Ricky Thomason lists the safety failures of TVA’s nuclear power plants
We’re playing with a nuclear Beelzebubba, HUNTSVILLE, Alabama _ We are playing with the devil’s own fire – but the devil ain’t playing, and even if he were he plays for keeps.Al.com By Ricky Thomason , July 03, 2011,
That’s easy to forget when the Tennessee Valley Authority warms and cools our homes and powers industries that buy our groceries. It’s also easier kept out of sight and mind when powerful nuclear energy concerns downplay, minimize, hide and deny clear and present dangers. Mama Nuke rocks us sweetly with low energy prices and soothes, “Shhhhh – everything is all right. TVA will save the day. Go back to sleep.”…..
months ago, post Fukushima Daiichi’s meltdowns in the wake of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami, Brown’s Ferry officials took selected media personnel on an extensive tour of the plant and touted the safety of the place and TVA’s operation and control. The public was told BFNPP could withstand a direct hit from an F-6 tornado. It had backup cooling systems on its backup systems and an entire herd of batteries and diesel pumps that assured the safety and cooling water supplies and the reactors would scram to auto-shutdown in any event.
I don’t recall mention of how much cooling water was required on a shut down reactor, nor any mention of the critical necessity of continuous cooling water to the massively overloaded spent fuel rod “temporary storage” pools that sit in little more than tin sheds above the massively reinforced reactors. I shudder to contemplate the effects of one nut in one plane from one of two airports a stone’s throw away.
Here are some of the incidents the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission records show BFNPP reported since its grand safety tour. Bet your bippy they didn’t report anything they didn’t absolutely have to…….
