US Utilities Concerned About Water, Nuclear Waste Disposal – Study WSJ, DOW JONES NEWSWIRES,-By Cassandra Sweet, * JUNE 13, 2011 U.S. utilities are increasingly concerned about adequate water supply and nuclear waste disposal and storage, and many of them see mergers and acquisitions as an important way to pay for improvements, according to a survey released Monday.
Most of the 700 respondents of the survey, by Black & Veatch, also expressed concern about relatively slow expected growth in sales over the next five years. Most of those polled also said they expect commodity prices to rise “significantly” over the same time period.
Utility industry employees and consultants surveyed cited carbon emissions legislation, water supply and nuclear fuel disposal and storage as their top environmental concerns.
“Water’s emergence as a top environmental and business concern really moved pretty dramatically,” said Mark Gabriel, a senior vice president at Black & Veatch……While respondents of the annual survey have cited nuclear waste disposal and storage as a concern in the past, respondents ranked it as a top concern for the first time this year, Gabriel said.
