It’s Not Easy Being Antinuclear – Japan Real Time – WSJ* May 30, 2011, By Yoree Koh It’s a difficult time to trumpet the virtues of nuclear energy in Japan, but it appears naysayers are finding that speaking out can have negative consequences.

Japanese actor Taro Yamamoto’s career took a surprising swerve last week when his antinuclear activities came back to affect his career. Mr. Yamamoto on Friday tweeted he left his management agency of 13 years, SIS. He said he did not wish to cause them further trouble related to his antinuclear activities.

Mr. Yamamoto has become an outspoken opponent of nuclear power plants in recent weeks. He has participated in rallies, and specifically he has garnered publicity with his views on the government-mandated standard of the allowable radiation-exposure levels for children. He broadcast his message for an organization called “Operation Children” on YouTube, posted May 14. The video has more than 300,000 views. The 36-year-old actor set off a flurry of interest on Twitter earlier in the week when he tweeted he lost a role in an upcoming TV show.
