G-8 Affirms Need For Tightest Nuclear Safety, But Won’t Be

Smith May 26, 2011| Dow Jones Newswires DEAUVILLE, France – – Leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized countries Thursday affirmed the need to raise safety standards in nuclear energy after the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan triggered the world’s worst nuclear crisis since the 1986 Chernobyl accident.
But the group was divided on imposing binding rules put forth by Russia, and on the future of their nuclear energy policies, leaders and officials said……
The group appeared likely to stop short of accepting to be bound by any proposals from Russia, whose President Dmitry Medvedev has suggested making states legally responsible for responding to nuclear accidents, and for providing timely and detailed information on accidents to other countries.
