Bruce Power scraps plans to ship generators through Great Lakes, Vancouver Sun, By Mark Iype, Postmedia News May 16, 2011 Ontario utility company Bruce Power has withdrawn its request for approval from the U.S. to transport 16 decommissioned nuclear reactors across the Great Lakes for recycling, despite permission from Canadian regulators, according to a Michigan state lawmaker.
U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller, whose district lies near the eastern coast of Michigan, said in a statement that the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration informed her that Bruce Power had scrapped plans to ship the radiation-laced steam generators through the Great Lakes region to Sweden for processing.
“PHMSA has informed my office that Bruce Power has withdrawn their request and application to ship the 16 decommissioned nuclear steam generators through the Great Lakes,” Miller said……
The decision to not seek permission from U.S. regulators comes about six weeks after Bruce Power said it was delaying its shipping plans so that it could consult with various environmental, native and Metis groups that had expressed concerns over the project.
The groups, concerned about safety, opposed the controversial shipment, which would have essentially seen 1,600 tonnes of radioactive waste transported across the lakes for the first time…..
