Goanese join opposition to Jaitapur nuclear plant
No to Jaitapur Nuclear Project, The Times of India, TNN | Apr 12, 2011, PANAJI: A group of around 60 Goans voiced their opposition against the Jaitapur Nuclear Project by participating in a candlelight vigil at Bandodkar Samadhi, Miramar at 6pm. The protesters held candles and placards to express their solidarity with the people of Japan on the one month anniversary of the nuclear catastrophe. Similar vigils were held in 10 cities across India on Greenpeace National Day of Action against Nukes.
Greenpeace organizers at Miramar pointed out that the Japan nuclear disaster took place 25 years after Chernobyl, the worst nuclear accident reported so far and that Japan is still suffering from earthquake relapses.
They added that in India, there were six untested foreign reactors of 1,600mw capacity supplied by French company Arvera and built on a site which is earthquake prone — making the Jaitapur project a recipe for disaster……
the proposed Jaitapur project in Maharashtra would be the largest nuclear power park in the worked and that India is planning on adding 21 additional foreign nuclear reactors to the 20 reactors currently in operation.
