Food imports from 12 Japanese areas now banned in China
China bans farm produce imports from 12 areas of Japan because of radiation worries Canadian Business Online, 9 April 11, BEIJING (AP) – China has banned imports of farm produce from 12 areas near Japan’s stricken nuclear power plant.
The official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday that the move was made as a precautionary measure due to continuing problems with northeastern Japan’s radiation-leaking Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, which was damaged by the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Food and agricultural imports from other parts of Japan will be tested for radioactivity and will need to have certificates showing where they were produced.
China has been on high alert for contamination since the nuclear power plant in neighboring Japan started leaking radiation. Trace amounts of atmospheric radiation have been detected in many parts of China.
