Earth Hour – a challenge to the consumer society
Some environmentalists dismiss Earth Hour as pretty much irrelevant to the global warming crisis, and to the issue of nuclear energy.
But I think that they are wrong. Earth Hour in itself might mean just a temporary drop in energy use, worldwide. But during Earth Hour, people realise how they can manage quite well, using less energy.
This is a subversive message – for it contradicts the whole “philosophy” behind society’s present rampant consumerism,
and ever-growing need to use more energy.
If the Consumer Society were to change to a Conserver Society, then the planet and its atmosphere would be treated with respect. Greenhouse gas emissions would diminish, and it would be obvious that nuclear energy is not needed. The nuclear lobby thrives on ever-growing consumption of energy and material “goods” – Christina Macpherson
Repair work at Fukushima nuclear reactor hampered by high radiation levels
High Radiation Levels Continue to Hamper Work at Crippled Japanese Nuclear Plant, Voice of America, 26 March 11, Steve Herman | Tokyo High radiation levels at a crippled Japanese nuclear power plant continue to slow efforts to bring the situation under control. The Fukushima-1 complex has suffered repeated trouble since a massive earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11.
Workers at the Fukushima-1 nuclear plant are trying to remove pools of highly radioactive water that may have seeped from reactor cores or where used fuel rods are stored at four of the six reactors.
It is the latest challenge at the crippled facility, which has been beset by a series of hydrogen explosions and radiation leaks since the March 11 tsunami destroyed its cooling system. Since then, fire engines and concrete trucks have been used to pour thousands of tons of seawater onto the reactors and into the fuel rod pools……

Don’t let the nuclear industry tell you that radiation is safe
Don’t let the nuclear industry tell you radiation’s safe The Punch, Jim Green, 25 March, 11, “………..A big part of the spin surrounding the Fukushima crisis is the claim − or the unstated, implicit assumption − that low level radiation exposures are ‘safe’ or ‘harmless’. However there is no safe level of radiation − the risk of fatal cancer is proportional to the dose, even at the lowest levels of exposure.
The Committee on the Biological Effects of Ionising Radiation of the US National Academy of Sciences comprehensively studied the issue and concluded that “the risk of cancer proceeds in a linear fashion at lower doses without a threshold and … the smallest dose has the potential to cause a small increase in risk to humans.”
….fringe scientists claim that low level radiation exposure is not only harmless but actually good for you….
……To estimate the death toll from Fukushima, it will be necessary to estimate the total human radiation exposure as a result of the accidents. The standard risk estimate for low level radiation can then be applied.
It is far too early to be attempting those calculations for Fukushima, but we can apply the logic to Chernobyl. Total radiation exposure from Chernobyl was 600,000 Sieverts according to the International Atomic Energy Agency and thus an estimated 24,000 people will die, nearly all of them because of cancers induced by low level radiation exposure….. Nuclear marketing deception by Lawrence Solomon
Today, 26/3/11, the Financial Post tells us that Lawrence Solomon is executive director of Energy Probe, an anti-nuclear organization.
But, lo and behold, it would seem that Energy Probe is more of a pro nuclear marketing organisation. And here are some quotes from today’s articles on the Financial Post:
Avert Chernobyl-style hysteria in Japan Financial Post, Lawrence Solomon, 26 March 11, Turn down the dial on radiation fears “……Epidemiological studies in Russia demonstrated that the population of the most contaminated region near Chernobyl contracted fewer cancers than Russia’s general population….”
Japan’s radioactive fallout could have silver lining Financial Post, Lawrence Solomon: “…..The only evidence that exists as to the health of humans who have been irradiated at low levels points to a benefit, not a harm…..there is no scientific proof whatsoever to view the radiation emitted from the Fukushima plant as dangerous to the Japanese population, and certainly no reason for the Japanese to view those living near the plant as damaged goods…..”
Travellers from Tokyo found to have high radiation levels
High radiation levels in Japanese travellers to China, Sify News, Beijing, March 26 (IANS) Two Japanese travellers who had flown into an eastern city in China from Tokyo had radiation levels well above safety limits, officials said. The travellers who flew into Wuxi city in Jiangsu province had radiation levels that ‘seriously exceeded the limit’, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. They came from Nagano and Saitama prefectures in Japan, the agency said.An official in Wuxi said: ‘It (radiation) was on their clothes, it has not affected their bodies.’This discovery marked the first time that contamination from the nuclear crisis reached the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Daily said. The agency said the Japanese nationals were given medical treatment and now pose no risk to others………High radiation levels in Japanese travellers to China

USA nuclear firms not able to shake India’s Nuclear Liability Act

Emboldened anti-nuclear activists marched on the Indian Parliament today, and the WikiLeaks website gave critics more fodder this week by releasing a U.S. diplomatic cable that reported money was offered to lock down Indian legislators’ support for the nuclear pact……the government has been weakened by scandals. … In this light, it is safe to say that the Indian [liability] legislation will not be amended to accommodate the interests of GE and Westinghouse.”..
Japan Disaster Refuels Liability Debate in U.S.-India Nuclear Pact, NYTimes.com, By ELANA SCHOR March 25, 2011“…..Amid that uncertainty over how much of the radiation seeping from the Fukushima plant could have been kept in check, a heated debate has erupted in India over the evolution of its still-undersized nuclear industry and the implementation of its 6-year-old deal with Washington. Uranium industry’s optimism doesn’t seem justified
insurance liability caps granted to the American nuclear power industry, for example, produce an annual indirect subsidy of $33 million for every reactor in the United States…..liability costs to the Japanese government arising from Fukushima Daiichi, while still impossible to estimate, were presumably large, and might make other governments see that offering subsidies to renewable energy sources might be a comparative bargain…

EU to test nuclear reactor threats from earthquakes, floods, terrorism
The tests should assess threats from earthquakes, floods, airplane crashes and terrorists and examine the robustness of backup cooling systems, according to Günther Oettinger, the bloc’s energy commissioner. The tests should also assess the security of ponds where highly radioactive spent fuel is stored, Luis Echávarri, director general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Nuclear Energy Agency, said
Europe to Test Safety of Nuclear Reactors NYTimes.com By JAMES KANTER March 25, 2011 BRUSSELS — After a week of bickering over the future of nuclear power, European Union leaders reached one point of agreement Friday as they decided that reactors across all 27 member nations should undergo safety tests in response to the continuing radiation leaks from a beleaguered plant in Japan… Continue reading
The vulnerability of USA’s spent nuclear fuel cooling ponds
Three-quarters of that waste is stored in water-filled cooling pools like those at the Japanese plant, stored outside the thick concrete containment barriers that block the release of radioactive material in an accident…..”The spent-fuel pools are currently holding, on the average, four times more than their designs intended,”
Japan Disaster Raises Questions About Backup Power at U.S. Nuclear Plants, NYTimes.com, By MIKE SORAGHAN March 24, 2011 In the United States, most spent fuel remains on site at nuclear plants because the country has not developed a facility to store it.The United States has 71,862 tons of the waste, according to a recent analysis by the Associated Press (Greenwire, March 23).
We cannot really control nuclear power – it is a devilish problem
Nuclear reactors are not evil: they produce the power that runs the modern world. They are present on every continent, often near urban and industrial megacomplexes. This is prima facie good……But nuclear reactors are the devil, because in our critically unstable world we cannot be sure of remaining in a position to control them.
Is it reasonable to stake our future on a devilishly uncontrollable, potentially lethal technology?
Pact With the Devil — Thoughts on Our Nuclear Future , HUFFINGTON POST, Ervin Laszlo, 25 March 11, Nuclear power is not evil; it’s the devil. Evil of our own making can be overcome. The devil cannot be overcome, not even if we ourselves conjure him into being. This is why staking our future on nuclear power is a pact with the devil.
Spokesmen for the nuclear lobby claim nuclear reactors are safe. Continue reading
In Japan nuclear regulators and the regulated are the same people

Murky past of Japan’s troubled nuclear industry revealed, The main nuclear power operator has cut corners over the years – with the government’s knowledge. The Independent, 24 March 11, Daniel Howden reports in Fukushima prefecture, 25 March 2011 “…..TEPCO were told from the start that the primary containment vessels, based on 50-year-old US technology, were too small.
China selling off old nuclear reactor models to Pakistan
China to Sell Outdated Nuclear Reactors to Pakistan, Voice of America, Stephanie Ho | Beijing March 24, 2011 China is pressing ahead with nuclear energy cooperation with Pakistan, despite concerns that it is shipping decades-old technology to its South Asian neighbor. This comes as China suspended approvals for new nuclear power plants within China to review safety standards following the recent earthquake/tsunami disaster in Japan. Continue reading
India’s Nuclear Liability Law has new relevance, as Fukushima disaster unfolds
The Obama administration is keen to see the Indian liability law changed, warning that any supplier burden could jeopardize investment gains teed up by the U.S.-India civil nuclear pact in 2005, but the Japanese crisis stands to throw a wrench in that effort…..Should the prospect of nuclear suppliers and operators battling in court over any Indian safety lapse dissuade U.S. companies from entering that country’s market, it would compound the financial blow already expected within the industry as a result of the Fukushima crisis
Japan Disaster Refuels Liability Debate in U.S.-India Nuclear Pact, NYTimes.com, By ELANA SCHOR March 25, 2011 Nuclear-powered nations are taking a hard look at safety in the wake of Japan’s struggle to stave off a meltdown. But as the thorny question of liability emerges, a push to reassess who pays for post-disaster rebuilding could flare up in India — where the United States hopes to gain from a nascent nuclear boom Continue reading
