Asia Pacific countries monitor radiation from Fukushima nuclear plant

    As winds took the contaminated clouds from the battered Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant out into the Pacific Ocean towards Hawaii and the US west coast, Japan’s nearest Asian neighbours stepped up their monitoring of potential nuclear fallout…..Taiwan-based EVA Airways said it would cancel 56 flights between Japan and Taiwan because of radiation concerns.

    As winds took the contaminated clouds from the battered Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant out into the Pacific Ocean towards Hawaii and the US west coast, Japan’s nearest Asian neighbours stepped up their monitoring of potential nuclear fallout.China, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong increased their observations for nuclear radiation in preparation for the worst-case scenario in which the toxic cloud from Japan’s stricken plant blows their way.On Canada’s Pacific coast, panic buying of iodine pills has been reported.And Australia’s food safety authority is investigating a possible risk that products imported from Japan could become contaminated with radiation.Food Standards Australia New Zealand said the probe would assess a narrow band of imported products such as seaweed, wasabi, dried noodles and soy sauce……..
    In Thailand, Thai Airways said its crews and cabin staff were avoiding overnight stays in Japan to reduce the risk of employees being affected by radiation.
