German government turning against nuclear power

Merkel Getting More Anti-Nuclear as State Elections Loom WSJ, By Bernd Radowitz March 17, 2011Upcoming state elections and opinion polls seem to have transformed German Chancellor Angela Merkel into an anti-nuclear warrior.
After tens of thousands protested against nuclear power here after seeing gruesome images of the nuclear disaster in Japan, Mrs. Merkel on Monday announced a three-month moratorium on her government’s decision from last autumn to let nuclear power plants run until 2036.
On Tuesday, Mrs. Merkel said she will take Germany’s seven oldest reactors off the grid during the review. “We will use the period of the moratorium to speed up the turnaround in energy,” Mrs. Merkel told parliament Thursday, acknowledging that nuclear plants may be switched off faster than her government had planned….Mrs. Merkel says she wants to speed up the build-up of renewable energies, and the accompanying extension of electricity grids…..
