Utility Commissioners Sue To Suspend Annual Nuclear Waste Fees By Tennille Tracy NEWSWIRES,WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones) 8 march 11, A group representing state utility commissioners sued the U.S. Energy Department Monday to try to prevent it from collecting hundreds of millions of dollars in fees to build a nuclear waste dump.
The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners says the Energy Department should suspend the annual fees–charged to nuclear power plants and their consumers, and totaling about $750 million in 2010–until the government decides when and where to build a nuclear waste repository.
Their lawsuit follows the Obama administration’s decision to scrap plans for a nuclear waste site at Yucca Mountain, Nev., which was designated by Congress years ago as the nation’s first waste repository.
The Obama administration says the Yucca Mountain project is unworkable. It has launched a commission to find a new site, but the NARUC says it could be several years before a repository is constructed and the federal government can begin accepting waste from nuclear power plants.
Until then, the association wants to halt the nuclear waste fund fees that the Energy Department collects for that purpose…….
