US Republicans choose to cut nuclear non proliferation programs

House Republicans Cut Funding That Protects Us From Nuclear Terrorism, ThinkProgress , By Max Bergmann on Feb 14th, 2011 On Friday, House Republicans put forth a “continuing resolution” (CR) to fund the government past March 4th that was filled with spending cuts.

While this came as no surprise, one focus of the cuts is causing some heads to turn. House Republicans are choosing to significantly cut the National Nuclear Security Administration’s nonproliferation programs, the sole purpose of which is to prevent terrorists from getting their hands on loose nuclear weapons and materials. Indiana Bill restricts public information on nuclear costs

the bill would… shift the risk of building traditional power plants from the utility companies to customers…The bill would also direct the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to “exercise all necessary caution” to avoid disclosing confidential information it receives from utilities to the public during rate cases or capital projects…The new bill underscores the state’s efforts to keep such information private.

USA’s mounting mountains of nuclear waste, and of its legal costs

Some companies have won their lawsuits while others have settled with the government.  According to the Justice Department, the government has already paid the companies $960 million. And assuming the government will be able to collect the waste by 2020, the Energy Department estimates the government’s liability could reach $16.2 billion.

Let’s kick dirty nuclear out of “Clean Energy Standard”

Still time to join effort to get dirty, dangerous, and expensive nuclear power booted out of Obama’s call for a “Clean Energy Standard”, Beyond Nuclear, 9 Feb 2011, As soon as rumors swirled that President Obama might include dirty, dangerous, and expensive nuclear power, and other dirty energy sources, in his State of the Union call to Congress and the nation for a “Clean Energy Standard,” the anti-nuclear movement took action. Led by Friends of the Earth, 45 groups, including Beyond Nuclear, wrote to Obama, urging him to not include nuclear and other dirty energy in his “Clean Energy Standard.”

Now Friends of the Earth has gathered over 100 groups onto its letter, which it plans to send to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Friends of the Earth is still taking group signatures onto their letter. To sign your group on, simply email Ben Schreiber at bschreiber@foe.org ASAP. Include your group name and state, and basic contact info. so Ben can get back to you if he needs to.

Electricite de France admits to safety flaws in 34 nuclear reactors

EDF says flaw in 34 reactors could affect safety  Feb 11, 2011  PARIS, (Reuters) – France’s EDF   has detected a technical flaw in 34 of its 58 nuclear reactors that could have an impact on safety, the utility said in a note on its website.
EDF’s 900 megawatt reactors, built in the 1970s, do not meet current standards of precision required for measuring water flows in their water injection systems.
