French Government Reaffirms EDF’s Lead Role In Nuclear Energy, FoxBusiness.com, By Angeline Benoit and Geraldine AmielFebruary 21, 2011| Dow Jones Newswires – The French government issued Monday new guidelines for the country’s nuclear-energy industry, reaffirming the leading role of state-controlled Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR) in the sector after a French consortium failed to win a key overseas contract in 2009.
The government also envisages the construction of a new type of reactor in France and will force state-controlled nuclear engineering firm Areva SA (CEI.FR, ARVCY) to confine its uranium-mining operations in a separate legal unit…….
Since its creation in 2001, Areva has prided itself on being an integrated nuclear-power company, with activities ranging from uranium extraction to nuclear waste treatment. The group designs and supplies nuclear reactors as well as builds nuclear power plants. It also mines uranium and provides nuclear-related services. It’s the world’s largest company of its kind and competes against the U.S.’s Westinghouse and a growing number of Asian groups.
However, the French government, which owns more than 93% of Areva, has been looking to raise the cash needed to realize the company’s investment needs………….
The government on Monday also opened the door for French companies to develop along with Chinese partners a third-generation mid-sized nuclear reactor of 1000 megawatts
