Legal case on unsafe transport of radioactive device

Charges laid for unsafe transportation of radioactive device  Vancouver Sun, By Kelly Cryderman, Calgary Herald February 2, 2011 A case involving rarely used nuclear safety charges — and a radioactive device that travelled unlocked from northern Alberta to Ottawa — will be heard in a Calgary courtroom next month.

Mistras Canada Inc., based in Olds, Alta., and which also operates as Nomad Inspection Services Ltd., faces six charges under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act for the improper handling, storage and transport of a nuclear substance.The charges are the result of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission investigation of events in November and December 2008 which resulted in two truck drivers being exposed to a radiation level above a limit set for the public……

Although such radioactive exposures are rare, they are not unheard of.

The commission also ordered a different Calgary company to halt its use of nuclear materials in August 2009 after one of its employees was exposed to a radioactive material while working in Manitoba.
