India-US nuclear deal will trigger S.E. Asia arms race
Pakistan threatens nuclear arms race after India-U.S. deal, Montreal Gazette, By Dean Nelson and Ben Farmer, The Daily Telegraph, January 27, 2011 Pakistan has threatened a new nuclear arms race in South Asia after Washington supported a move that Islamabad claims will allow India to move ahead with its weapons program.
Pakistan’s military leadership is determined to maintain the current ratio of nuclear warheads between India and Pakistan and is concerned that India is pulling ahead following the 2009 launch of a domestically-produced nuclear submarine.
Islamabad also points to Washington’s decision to support Indian membership of the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group, a multinational body that tries to halt nuclear proliferation by controlling the export and transfer of weapons materials.
Washington has also agreed to help India develop its civil nuclear power industry. Pakistan claims this will help New Delhi to further increase its nuclear arsenal. Neither India nor Pakistan have signed the non-proliferation treaty.
