UK renewable energy has grown fast
Renewable energy use reaches record levels, Rapid Electronics , 24 Dec 10, The renewable energy industry made its highest ever contribution to the UK’s electricity supply during the autumn, new figures show. According to data from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the renewable energy sector supplied 8.6 per cent of all electricity in the third quarter of the year, nearly hitting the government’s target of generating ten per cent of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2010.The proportion of wind, hydro power and other forms of renewable energy supplied also increased by 23.1 per cent compared to the same period last year, with wind energy alone increasing by 36.9 per cent year-on-year.
Speaking to BusinessGreen, a spokesperson for RenewableUK pointed out that the figures put the UK on track to meet the 2020 target of sourcing 15 per cent of energy from renewables and if the trend continues, the UK could meet its target of supplying ten per cent of energy from renewables by the end of the year.“This shows that we as an industry were right all along in promoting the potential of this technology and advocating that wind can make a serious contribution to the UK’s electricity supply,” the spokesperson said.
