India Rules out Change in Civil Nuclear Liability Law India Journal Dec 17, 2010 BRUSSELS – India on Dec. 9 firmly ruled out any change in the civil nuclear liability law notwithstanding repeated concerns expressed by countries exporting atomic equipments over compensation claim in the event of an accident.
Government sources discounted suggestions that pressure is being put on India to make some changes in the Civil Nuclear Liability Legislation.Sources said the dealings by nuclear suppliers with India will have to be well within the legal framework envisaged in the legislation passed in Parliament….
The US nuclear industry has been the most vocal on the liability issue in the event of a mishap involving their equipment.Anne Lauvergeon, CEO of Areva, a French company, had said it is very important to know the rules of implementation of the liability law.
She clarified that the liability issue would not be a deal-breaker, but needed to be “clarified”.
Russia had also expressed concern over some clauses of the nuclear liability law, leading to delay in finalizing contracts for building two more atomic power plans at Kudankulam in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. (PTI)
