..More than a few cables noted Washington’s efforts to prod Beijing to be more active in opposing nuclear proliferation.

Other reports showed how much Embassy reporting in the Chinese capital continues to rely on hearsay, gossip, and the odd conversation with analysts and scholars who may or may not be part of the policy-making process.

In all, the 8,300 or so cables of conversations with or about China appear to be notable for the ongoing awkward uncertainties that mark Sino-American relations these days.
