Germany’s Social Democrats gain support on nuclear issue
The nuclear issue has become the most attractive for the Social Democrats, with the majority of Germans opposed to extending the life of the country’s 17 nuclear power plants.
Opposition in Germany Rolls Out Its Platform, New York Times, By JUDY DEMPSEY : September 26, 2010 * BERLIN — The Social Democrats unveiled a political program Sunday aimed at stopping the extension of the life of nuclear power…...in the past month have the Social Democrats’ approval ratings picked up, reaching 29 percent compared with 23 percent after elections last year, according to the Infratest dimap and Allensbach. In contrast, Mrs. Merkel’s coalition has fallen from around 47 percent to 37 percent over the same period.
The nuclear issue has become the most attractive for the Social Democrats, with the majority of Germans opposed to extending the life of the country’s 17 nuclear power plants.
Mrs. Merkel’s conservative bloc agreed this month that the life span of the plants would be extended by up to 14 years, depending on their age. The decision overturned a 2002 law by a Social Democrats and Green coalition that voted to shut all nuclear plants by 2022….
