Anti-nuclear activists arrested during Honeywell plant protest – Kansas City News Mandy Oaklander, Aug. 17 2010 Protesters from as far away as Florida convened at the Honeywell plant construction site yesterday in south Kansas City. The protest was the culmination of a three-day gathering for the KC Nuclear Weapons Plant Conference
The activists condemn the plant, which will replace one nearby and will be the first new nuclear weapons plant built in the United States in over 30 years. It will cost $4.8 billion, says the KC National Nuclear Security Administration/Honeywell Watch blog. The plant will manufacture non-nuclear parts for uber-nuclear weapons.
According to the National Catholic Reporter, the protesters held hands, planted sunflower seeds and sang along to a guitar while blocking the path of massive equipment, whose bulldozing was forced to a halt. Colorful signs prodded the skies with demands to “Stop Building for Nuclear War” and “Plant Gardens, not Bombs.”The display continued for about 45 minutes, until police arrived and arrested 14 protesters for trespassing.
