Uncertainty over nuclear power plants in Canada
Quebec N-station repair delayed amid AECL uncertainty Nicolas Van Praet, Financial Post · Aug. 16, 2010 MONTREAL — Hydro-Québec is pushing back the revamp of its Gentilly-2 nuclear station amid the continuing uncertainty of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.
The Canadian government is trying to sell AECL, a Crown corporation, to private investors under a restructuring being led by New York merchant bank N.M. Rothschild and Sons. But the corporation is drowning in problems.Its refurbishment of the Point Lepreau nuclear reactor in New Brunswick is behind schedule and there is disagreement between the province and Ottawa over costs.
Ontario, a likely customer for AECL’s new generation of reactors, said last summer that won’t buy any new reactors for the time being…..
